The Andhra Pradesh state government has announced plans to develop exclusive townships with superior infrastructure for middle and high-income groups (MIG and HIG) in urban areas. Kurnool, Ananthapuram-Hindupuram, and Kadapa will be the first regions to implement these projects. Urban development authorities, guided by joint collectors, will identify suitable land and ensure essential infrastructure- roads, water, electricity, and drainage-is ready before housing begins. According to reports from TNN and ET Realty, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister, P Narayana, recently reviewed the proposal with the Chief Minister's vision of developing townships for middle and high-income groups to foster growth and address housing concerns. Narayana emphasized the need for urban civic bodies to play an active role in providing essential infrastructure such as roads, water supply, electricity, and drainage, which should be developed before the housing projects begin. He further suggested that urban development authorities could become self-sustainable by generating income from these projects.
The minister encouraged joint collectors and urban development authorities to examine best practices from other states in executing such initiatives. Additionally, municipal commissioners were urged to focus on improving drinking water supply, waste management, and other urban amenities. As the state government cannot fully fund the infrastructure, Narayana recommended that local authorities adopt innovative methods to achieve self-sustainability and carry out the projects. The government's strategy includes appointing joint collectors as vice-chairmen and managing directors for urban development authorities, with the Town Planning Director overseeing all new initiatives.
