The Public Works Department has initiated the compensation claim process for land acquired for the Ponda Bhoma highway expansion in Goa. Around 46,308 square metres of land across multiple villages has been notified, and affected landowners have been asked to submit claims. The project includes widening works, flyovers, and underpasses to ease traffic congestion. The construction contract worth INR 273 crore has already been awarded, though the work order is still pending. The project has faced local resistance earlier, mainly over land acquisition and impact on structures.
The Public Works Department has moved ahead with the compensation process for land acquired for the Ponda Bhoma highway expansion, issuing a notification to affected landowners across villages such as Priol, Veling, Kunkoliem and Kundaim. The step comes after land required for the project was identified and taken up for acquisition.
As part of the process, landowners have been asked to submit their compensation claims. Officials indicated that once the claims are verified, a valuation award list will be prepared. This list will include compensation for both land and trees that have been marked for removal during the execution of the project. The inclusion of tree valuation is important, as several stretches fall in green cover areas.
The total land acquired for the project is around 46,308 square metres. The expansion is part of a broader plan to improve traffic flow on this key route, which connects important parts of central Goa and handles a high volume of daily vehicular movement.
The project design includes a mix of widening and grade-separated infrastructure. A six-lane flyover has been planned between the Dilasa Palliative Care Centre and the Farmagudi traffic police station, while the rest of the stretch will be developed into four lanes. In addition, two major underpasses of about 60 metres each have been planned at Mardol and Mangueshi junctions to ease congestion at busy intersections. A smaller underpass near Kundaim and a vehicular overpass near the GVM's College complex are also part of the plan, aimed at reducing traffic bottlenecks.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already awarded the construction contract for the project to a Gurugram-based firm at a cost of INR 273 crore. However, the project is yet to receive a formal work order, which is required before on-ground construction activities can begin. This has kept the execution phase pending despite progress on the administrative side.
Land acquisition for the highway had seen resistance in earlier stages, with some local residents raising concerns about loss of property and possible impact on houses and other structures. There were also objections regarding demarcation in certain areas. Despite this, the authorities continued with the acquisition process and have now moved to the compensation stage.
The Ponda Bhoma stretch has been identified as a critical corridor due to frequent congestion and increasing traffic demand over the years. The proposed upgrade is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and make movement safer once completed.
