The Delhi government has approved a INR 626.8 crore road strengthening and repair programme to be executed by the Public Works Department (PWD) across major corridors in east, south, and north Delhi. Announced in the past week, the initiative targets heavily used arterial and feeder roads, with funds distributed region-wise to address traffic load and deteriorating road conditions. Key stretches identified for upgrades include West End Marg, Mandi Road, and Barapullah Elevated Road. The works will involve resurfacing, structural strengthening, and maintenance interventions aimed at improving ride quality and extending road life. Bids for the projects have already been invited, indicating the start of implementation in the new financial year.
The Delhi government has rolled out a INR 626.8 crore road strengthening and repair programme through the Public Works Department (PWD), covering key arterial and connector roads across the city, with tenders already issued and implementation expected to commence in the new financial year. The initiative, announced in the past week, is aimed at addressing deteriorating road conditions, improving traffic flow, and reducing recurring maintenance requirements across heavily used corridors. The total allocation has been distributed across regions, with INR 143.1 crore earmarked for east Delhi, INR 256.5 crore for south Delhi, and INR 227.2 crore for north Delhi. Officials indicated that the allocation reflects both existing road conditions and traffic intensity, with priority given to stretches experiencing high vehicular load and surface wear.
In south Delhi, where a mix of arterial traffic and dense local movement creates sustained pressure on infrastructure, several prominent stretches have been identified for strengthening works. These include West End Marg, 100 Foota Road in Chhatarpur, SSN Marg, Gadaipur Bandh Road, and Mandi Road. Additional works will be undertaken on Apeejay School Road, Sector-1 main road in Pushp Vihar, Mandir Marg in Panchsheel Enclave, and the service road along C V Raman Road.
The plan also covers critical transport links such as the Defence Colony flyover service road, Barapullah Elevated Road Phase I connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Sarai Kale Khan, and the Nehru Place flyover on the Outer Ring Road. These corridors play a key role in intra-city connectivity and frequently experience congestion, making them a focus area for structural upgrades.
In north Delhi, the works will include the stretch connecting the Outer Ring Road at Bhera Enclave to Sai Baba Mandir in Paschim Vihar, the Zakhira flyover, and roads along the Yamuna canal. These routes serve as important connectors within the city's road network and are subject to heavy traffic volumes, necessitating periodic strengthening interventions.
Officials stated that the programme is part of a broader effort to improve ride quality, extend the lifespan of road infrastructure, and reduce the frequency of maintenance cycles. The approach focuses on structural strengthening rather than temporary repairs, with the objective of enhancing durability and ensuring more consistent road conditions across key corridors.
The initiative aligns with the government's wider infrastructure strategy, which places emphasis on upgrading existing assets alongside new development. With Delhi's road network handling high traffic density and ageing infrastructure, targeted investments in maintenance and strengthening are being prioritised to improve overall mobility and reduce commuter inconvenience.
