The district in-charge minister for Mysuru, HC Mahadevappa, has directed officials to immediately advance a series of road-widening initiatives across the city to address escalating traffic congestion. In a meeting convened earlier this week, Mahadevappa emphasised the urgency of widening several arterial routes, including those connecting major junctions and public transport hubs, and instructed streamlined land-clearance and approval processes. The Mysuru City Corporation commissioner identified multiple stretches earmarked for widening, such as roads linking Dr BR Ambedkar Circle, Fountain Circle and the Suburban bus stand, as well as Pulakeshi, Hyder Ali and Dr Rajkumar Roads. Local legislators and senior administrators committed to coordinated action to accelerate implementation. During the meeting at the Zilla Panchayat mini hall, Mahadevappa stressed the need to address critical infrastructure deficits that have emerged as traffic volumes have grown, particularly on stretches that serve as links between commercial areas, transport hubs and residential neighbourhoods. He directed agencies to finalise plans for widening works without delay and encouraged the adoption of regulatory measures, such as transferable development rights where private land acquisition is necessary under existing rules.
Mysuru City Corporation commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif outlined several routes under consideration for immediate widening, including the corridors connecting Dr BR Ambedkar Circle to Fountain Circle, the suburban bus stand, and Chamundi Vihar Stadium road. Key urban arteries such as Pulakeshi Road, Hyder Ali Road and Dr Rajkumar Road were also highlighted as priorities, reflecting persistent congestion patterns in these zones. Local legislators, including MLA Tanveer Sait and Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy, attended the review and pledged to ensure co-ordinated execution of the planned works.
The minister's intervention follows sustained public and political concerns over traffic conditions in Mysuru, a historic city that has witnessed rising commuter volumes with increasing private vehicle ownership and urban development. Street-level reports and city planners have noted bottlenecks near commercial centres and junctions during peak hours, prompting calls for infrastructural upgrades.
Mahadevappa's direction aligns with broader infrastructure priorities seen in other urban centres, where widening of key corridors is being pursued to improve mobility and reduce delays. Projects of this nature, however, often hinge on complex land-acquisition processes and inter-departmental coordination, challenges that local officials are now facing head-on.
