Bihar's Nitish Kumar has called on state officials to expedite the construction of major drainage works in Patna, emphasising the need to address chronic waterlogging and sanitation concerns ahead of the impending monsoon season. In a meeting with senior administrators on 2 March 2026, he directed that progress on the Saidpur and Bakarganj drain infrastructure projects be accelerated and any bureaucratic obstacles be removed to ensure timely delivery. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of improved coordination among departments for regular monitoring and execution, given growing public concern over flooding risks in residential neighbourhoods. The directives reflect a broader state focus on strengthening urban infrastructure as part of ongoing efforts to modernise Patna's drainage network and reduce seasonal disruption.
Patna's administration has received fresh directives from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to fast-track critical drainage infrastructure projects designed to alleviate persistent waterlogging and enhance urban sanitation across the city. The instructions were issued during a review meeting with senior officials on 2 March 2026, where he emphasised the urgency of completing the Saidpur and Bakarganj drainage works ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
Officials said the meeting focused on identifying and removing procedural bottlenecks that have slowed execution of these key urban infrastructure initiatives, which are viewed as essential to preventing recurrent flooding and related disruptions in densely populated areas. Nitish Kumar asked departments to step up coordination among relevant agencies and ensure that progress is monitored closely, with timelines adhered to rigorously.
The Saidpur and Bakarganj drains form vital components of Patna's broader drainage improvement strategy, intended to channel stormwater efficiently and reduce surface water accumulation during heavy rains. Delays in these projects had sparked concerns among residents, many of whom face seasonal waterlogging that impedes movement, damages property and raises public health issues. The Chief Minister's emphasis on expedited completion reflects heightened administrative focus on urban resilience and infrastructure delivery.
In urging swift action, Nitish Kumar also called for removal of any bureaucratic hurdles that might impede the work, reinforcing the need for clarity in execution responsibilities and regular progress reporting. This follows earlier inspections and reviews of drainage works and road-over-drain construction in Patna as part of the state government's push to integrate comprehensive stormwater management with enhancements to commuting infrastructure.
Government sources indicated that officials have been instructed to hold frequent inter-agency reviews and escalate issues to the highest levels to maintain momentum on site. The renewed push comes amid growing public pressure to mitigate flood risk and bolster infrastructure standards in Bihar's capital city, where urban expansion and increased rainfall variability have strained existing systems.
As deadlines loom for the approaching monsoon, authorities are expected to publish updated milestones for the drainage project phases, signalling a sharper focus on urban water management and civic infrastructure delivery in Patna.
