The Enforcement Directorate has provisionally attached industrialist Anil Ambani's 17-storey residence 'Abode' in Mumbai's Pali Hill, valued at over INR 3,716 crore, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The action is part of an ongoing probe linked to alleged bank loan fraud involving Reliance Communications Ltd and related entities. With this move, total attachments in the case have crossed INR 15,700 crore. The agency has alleged that the property was placed under a family trust structure, raising questions over asset ownership and liability.
The Enforcement Directorate has provisionally attached industrialist Anil Ambani's luxury residence 'Abode' in the Pali Hill area of Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The 17-storey building, around 66 metres tall, has been valued at more than INR 3,716 crore. The property is one of the most prominent private residences in the city's upscale Bandra locality.
The attachment forms part of an ongoing money-laundering investigation linked to alleged bank loan fraud involving Reliance Communications Ltd (RCOM) and other group entities of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). According to the agency's findings, RCOM and its associated companies had collectively availed loans of about INR 40,185 crore from a consortium of domestic and foreign lenders. Several of these loan accounts were later classified as non-performing assets.
Officials stated that a portion of the same property, valued at INR 473.17 crore, had already been attached earlier in the investigation. With the latest action, the cumulative value of assets provisionally attached in the case has exceeded INR 15,700 crore.
The probe originates from a First Information Report registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation. During the course of investigation, the ED has examined the movement and ownership pattern of key assets linked to the group. The agency has alleged that the Pali Hill property was transferred to RiseE Trust, described as a private family trust associated with the Ambani family. Investigators have indicated that this structure appeared to distance direct ownership at a time when personal guarantees had reportedly been extended in relation to borrowings.
Under the PMLA framework, provisional attachment means the property cannot be sold, transferred or otherwise dealt with until the adjudicating authority reviews and confirms the order. If confirmed, the asset can be subject to confiscation following completion of legal proceedings.
Anil Ambani has previously appeared before the agency to record his statement in connection with the case. The investigation has also been supported by a special inquiry team constituted following directions of the Supreme Court to examine multiple alleged instances of fraud and money laundering involving group entities.
