Maruti Suzuki India Limited has secured registration under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) for its in-plant railway siding at the Gujarat manufacturing facility, making it the world's first modal shift transportation project to receive this recognition. By shifting vehicle dispatches from road to rail, the company expects to generate nearly 1.7 lakh carbon credits over a 10-year crediting period. Operational since early 2023, the siding has already dispatched over six lakh vehicles and supports emission reduction goals under internationally accepted carbon accounting standards.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has secured registration under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) programme managed by Verra for its in-plant railway siding at the Gujarat manufacturing facility. With this, the project has become the world's first modal shift transportation initiative to receive registration under this global carbon credit framework.
The project focuses on shifting finished vehicle transportation from road to rail, reducing greenhouse gas emissions linked to outbound logistics. Over a 10-year crediting period, the company expects the initiative to generate nearly 1.7 lakh carbon credits through verified emission reductions.
The emission savings have been calculated using the AM0090 methodology under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change's Clean Development Mechanism. After third-party validation and verification, Verra will issue carbon credits under its VCS programme based on the quantified reductions.
The Gujarat railway siding, located at the Hansalpur plant, became operational in early 2023. Since then, it has dispatched more than six lakh vehicles through rail transport. The facility enables direct loading of vehicles onto trains within the plant premises, reducing dependence on road carriers and lowering diesel consumption.
Maruti Suzuki's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hisashi Takeuchi, stated that the registration under Verra's VCS programme marked an important step in the company's sustainability efforts. He said the project demonstrates how operational efficiency and environmental responsibility can move together, while contributing to India's broader decarbonisation goals.
The company has been steadily increasing its use of railways for vehicle dispatch over the past few years. Apart from the Gujarat plant, it has expanded rail infrastructure at its Manesar facility as part of a wider strategy to lower logistics-related emissions and improve cost efficiency.
According to the company, the modal shift project also contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, good health and well-being, and decent work and economic growth. Reduced road movement helps ease highway congestion and lowers fossil fuel consumption in long-distance transportation.
