Synopsis

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has initiated a comprehensive repair and maintenance campaign for damaged outdoor gym and play equipment across parks in the capital following sustained public dissatisfaction over disrepair and safety concerns. The programme, rolled out after complaints from residents and local councillors, covers equipment installed in roughly 2,000 parks across the city's maintenance portfolio of about 15,000 parks. An initial tranche of work has been completed in around 300 parks, with repairs underway to restore fitness installations and make them safe for community use. In parallel, the civic body has earmarked INR 1.2 crore for a one-off repair effort targeting children's play equipment across its 1,200 wards, with councillors emphasising the importance of completing the work ahead of the approaching summer season.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has begun a city-wide drive to repair outdoor gym equipment and children's play installations in neighbourhood parks, a move prompted by sustained complaints from residents and elected representatives about unsafe and deteriorating facilities.

The initiative focuses on restoring fitness infrastructure that had fallen into disrepair in parks where equipment was installed at residents requests or following councillor representations. Civic data indicates that around 2,000 parks out of approximately 15,000 managed by the corporation have outdoor gym sets, many of which had become non-functional due to lack of timely maintenance.

City officials said the repair work has commenced in several zones, with around 300 parks already covered. The repairs are being undertaken by a newly appointed concessionaire, contracted not only to fix broken or damaged gym equipment but also to maintain it over the next year to minimise recurrence of neglect. Former maintenance contracts had lapsed, and a delay in appointing a successor had contributed to the deterioration, officials added.

The issue gained prominence after a recent meeting of the standing committee, where Mahipalpur councillor Inderjeet Sehrawat highlighted that broken and unsafe gym installations were discouraging residents from using public fitness spaces. Councillors said that without a structured maintenance policy and dedicated funds, the equipment was deteriorating rapidly, leading to safety hazards, particularly for senior citizens who regularly use the parks for exercise.

In addition to the gym equipment repairs, the civic body has allocated INR 1.2 crore to launch a one-time repair campaign for children's play equipment across its 1,200 wards. The plan is to complete these repairs before the summer vacation period, when park usage typically increases and the potential for accidents rises if equipment remains in poor condition. Councillors noted that ensuring safe and functional recreational spaces is essential to community well-being.

Officials said the current repair drive is part of broader efforts to improve park infrastructure and address longstanding maintenance shortcomings. The concessionaire will also be responsible for routine upkeep of equipment over a fixed period to prevent similar backlogs in the future.

The initiative reflects growing civic attention to urban open spaces and neighbourhood amenities, which have emerged as focal points of resident advocacy. Timely execution of the repairs and ongoing maintenance protocols will be closely watched by local communities who depend on parks for recreation and fitness.
