The Maharashtra government has announced plans to develop a large IT park near the proposed Purandar international airport in Pune district. The project is expected to generate nearly one lakh jobs and support the expansion of the region's technology sector. The state government is considering around 1,500 acres of government land in villages such as Dive, Chambali and Kodit for the development. Officials said the project will move forward after land transfer formalities and cabinet approval. The proposed IT park is also intended to ease pressure on Pune's existing Hinjewadi IT hub.
The Maharashtra government has announced plans to develop a new information technology park near the proposed international airport in Purandar taluka near Pune. The project is expected to create nearly one lakh jobs and attract technology companies to a new growth corridor in the Pune region.
Industries Minister Uday Samant informed the state legislative assembly that the proposed IT park will be located around 3-4 km from the site of the upcoming Purandar international airport. He indicated that the project will move ahead once the required land transfer from the revenue department to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is completed and the state cabinet grants final approval.
According to the proposal, around 1,500 acres of government land may be used for the development. The land parcels identified for the project are located in villages including Dive, Chambali and Kodit in Purandar taluka. The state government is examining the land availability and planning aspects before moving to the next stage of implementation.
The proposed IT park is expected to support the growing demand for technology office space in the Pune region. Over the past two decades, Pune has emerged as one of India's major IT and technology centres, attracting global and domestic companies across software development, engineering services and business process outsourcing.
At present, a large share of Pune's technology companies operate from the Hinjewadi IT Park, which is one of the largest IT clusters in the country. However, legislators raised concerns that increasing traffic congestion and infrastructure pressure in the Hinjewadi area have created operational difficulties for employees and companies. Several representatives pointed out that some firms have been evaluating alternative locations due to daily commute challenges and limited infrastructure expansion.
In response to these concerns, the state government indicated that developing a new IT hub in Purandar could help distribute technology growth more evenly across the region. The new park is expected to provide companies with better planned infrastructure and connectivity while reducing dependence on a single technology corridor.
The project will also benefit from its proximity to the proposed Purandar International Airport, which is being planned to address capacity constraints at Pune's existing airport in Lohegaon. The current airport operates from an Indian Air Force base and faces limitations in handling increasing passenger traffic and expanding infrastructure.
The Purandar airport project has been under discussion for several years as part of long-term planning for aviation infrastructure in the Pune metropolitan region. Once operational, the airport is expected to improve domestic and international connectivity while supporting cargo movement and business travel.
Officials believe that locating a technology park close to the airport could encourage companies that require faster connectivity for business travel and logistics operations. Large infrastructure projects such as airports often attract commercial development around them, including offices, industrial parks and residential projects.
The proposal for the IT park has been under discussion within government departments for some time. Administrative processes such as land identification, inter-department coordination and planning approvals have been progressing before the plan was formally discussed in the assembly.
Industry observers have noted that the project could open a new technology development corridor in the southern part of Pune district if implemented with proper infrastructure planning. At the same time, they have emphasised that road connectivity, public transport and urban services will need to be planned from the early stages to avoid challenges similar to those faced by existing IT clusters.
