The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) successfully recovered nearly INR 1 crore in property taxes from high-value defaulters in just two days through a concentrated enforcement drive. A six-member field team visited multiple city wards targeting property owners with dues exceeding INR 50,000. Measures included freezing bank accounts, prohibiting property sales, and seizing properties for noncompliance. Defaulters were notified via SMS and offered a one-time settlement scheme with interest and penalty waivers until the end of the month. The drive reflects PMC's continued focus on strengthening revenue collection and ensuring civic financial discipline.
The Patna Municipal Corporation recently completed a targeted property tax recovery initiative, collecting nearly INR 1 crore in outstanding dues within a span of 48 hours. The drive concentrated on property owners with arrears above INR 50,000, with a six-member flying squad visiting several city wards to ensure compliance.
Municipal Commissioner Yaspal Meena reviewed the recovery efforts with revenue and executive officers to coordinate further collection actions. Officials highlighted that property owners who failed to pay within the set deadline risked freezing of their bank accounts and attachment of their properties. Notices have also been issued preventing the sale of properties belonging to major defaulters until their dues are cleared.
The enforcement measures are being implemented under the Bihar Municipal Act 2007 and the Revenue Recovery Regulations of 2013. Defaulters were informed through SMS about the legal consequences of noncompliance. Residents were also reminded about a one-time settlement scheme available until March 31, allowing waiver of interest and penalties if they pay the principal tax amount within the period.
The initiative aligns with PMC's earlier efforts to enhance tax compliance. Past records indicate that a significant number of flats and properties in Patna remained outside the tax net, highlighting the ongoing challenge of expanding the municipal tax base. Previous drives have included property attachments and legal notices to ensure defaulters settled their dues.
This drive also reflects trends in other regions where civic bodies have combined enforcement with incentives to improve revenue collection. By focusing on high-value defaulters, PMC aims not only to recover immediate dues but also to instill a culture of timely tax compliance among property owners, ensuring a steady flow of funds for civic infrastructure and public services.
