Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is set to implement major enhancements to streamline passenger movement between Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3), with airside transfer facilities expected to be operational in the coming weeks. Plans for these airside transfers are progressing as Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) awaits clearances from relevant aviation safety authorities, including the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The project forms part of broader infrastructure improvements designed to support increasing passenger volumes and ease inter-terminal connectivity, particularly for those transferring between domestic and international flights. In addition to airside transfers, airport authorities are considering wider road access improvements, such as a new flyover to ensure signal-free movement between terminals. The proposed upgrades aim to significantly enhance the efficiency and experience of air travel at one of India's busiest aviation hubs.
Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi is preparing to introduce airside transfer facilities between Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 3 (T3) in a step towards improving passenger connectivity within the airport complex. The proposed airside transfers are expected to become operational in the coming weeks, with Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) currently seeking necessary clearances from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Airport officials said the initiative follows growing demand for smoother inter-terminal movement, especially for passengers connecting between domestic flights at T1 and international flights at T3. Once approved, the airside transfer system will enable passengers to move between the terminals without the need to exit the airside secure area, reducing transfer times and simplifying the experience for those making tight connections.
In parallel with the airside transfer plan, authorities are considering improvements to ground access routes between the two terminals. Proposals include constructing a flyover that would provide signal-free road access between T1 and T3, further easing passenger movement within the airport precinct. These enhancements form part of a broader programme of infrastructure development at IGIA aimed at catering to rising passenger traffic and improving overall operational efficiency.
The airport, operated by DIAL, has three terminals T1, T2 and T3 and handles a substantial share of both domestic and international air travel in the country. Connectivity between these terminals has historically involved road transfers, with shuttle services linking them at regular intervals. The introduction of dedicated airside transfer facilities seeks to complement these arrangements by allowing passengers to transition more seamlessly while remaining within secured zones.
Officials emphasised that enhancing inter-terminal connectivity is particularly timely given ongoing and planned expansion works across the airport. These include upgrades to existing terminals and the implementation of advanced transfer areas to facilitate smoother passenger flows. The airside transfer initiative is expected to significantly improve the travel experience, especially for those arriving on international flights and departing on domestic services, as well as for passengers transferring in the opposite direction.
Airport authorities anticipate final regulatory clearances and the subsequent commencement of airside transfers over the next few weeks, a development that would mark a key step in modernising passenger infrastructure at Delhi's primary aviation gateway.
