The Maharashtra government has unveiled plans to develop an access-controlled road that will directly connect the Vidarbha region to the upcoming Vadhavan deep-draft port on the state's western coast, significantly reducing freight transit times and strengthening logistics networks. Announced by the chief minister at a business conclave focused on Vidarbha's economic growth, the initiative is aimed at integrating central and eastern Maharashtra more closely with coastal trade routes, fostering industrial expansion and attracting investment. The new road is expected to cut travel time for goods from Vidarbha to the port to under eight hours, compared with much longer current routes. Officials highlighted that the project forms part of a wider infrastructure push in the region, including expressway and highway links connecting key industrial hubs and enhancing the state's position in national supply chains.
The Maharashtra government has announced the development of a dedicated access-controlled road linking the Vidarbha region with the under-construction Vadhavan Port on the state's western coast, in a move designed to transform freight logistics and boost investment potential across central and eastern Maharashtra. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at an international business conclave held during the Advantage Vidarbha event, where he emphasised the strategic role of enhanced connectivity in driving regional industrial growth.
Officials said the proposed access-controlled corridor will substantially shorten transit times for freight movement between Vidarbha historically a landlocked and under-served economic zone and the port, reducing travel to well under eight hours. This improved efficiency is expected to lower logistics costs for manufacturers, traders and agricultural producers, making the region more attractive to investors and positioning it as a competitive node in national and international supply chains.
The project announcement follows broader infrastructure initiatives aimed at integrating Vidarbha with key transport networks. Major corridor developments such as the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg and high-speed freight routes connecting Vadhavan Port to the Samruddhi Expressway are already in progress, with the latter set to reduce travel distances and enhance cargo mobility once completed.
Stakeholders at the business conclave also highlighted significant private sector commitments in energy, manufacturing and logistics sectors that support the infrastructure push. These included plans for solar module production hubs, electric vehicle manufacturing and green steel development, reflecting growing industrial diversification across the region.
By providing a direct and high-capacity road link from Vidarbha to a deep-draft port capable of handling large volumes of maritime trade, the Maharashtra government is seeking to unlock latent economic potential and align transport infrastructure with long-term investment and development strategies. This access-controlled road, along with complementary expressways and logistics corridors, is expected to enhance Maharashtra's role as a central logistics and manufacturing hub, supporting both regional and national economic objectives.
