Synopsis

The Maharashtra government has provided INR 4,897.19 crore for metro and road projects in the Kalyan -Badlapur corridor through the recent MMRDA budget. The allocation focuses on expanding Metro Lines 5, 5A, 12 and 14, along with major road works including the Kalyan Ring Road and Airoli-Katai Freeway Phase 3. The move aims to ease pressure on the heavily crowded suburban railway network connecting Badlapur, Ambernath, Kalyan, Dombivli and Thane with Mumbai, while improving overall connectivity in the fast-growing eastern belt of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The Maharashtra government has allocated INR 4,897.19 crore for metro and road infrastructure in the Kalyan-Badlapur corridor under the recent budget of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The investment is aimed at reducing congestion on the suburban railway network, which currently carries a large share of daily commuters from the eastern suburbs into Mumbai.

A major portion of the allocation is for metro expansion. Metro Line 5, connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan, has been provided INR 1,309.30 crore. An additional INR 183.35 crore has been earmarked for Metro Line 5A, which will extend connectivity towards Ulhasnagar. Metro Line 12 between Kalyan and Taloja has received INR 1,054.54 crore. Meanwhile, Metro Line 14, proposed between Kanjurmarg and Badlapur, has been allocated INR 500 crore. These corridors are expected to provide an alternative to the Central Railway suburban line, which remains one of the most crowded in the Mumbai region.

Alongside metro development, several road projects have been funded to strengthen east-west and intra-city connectivity. The Kalyan-Shilphata junction to Bhiwandi flyover has been allocated INR 150 crore. The long-planned Kalyan Ring Road project has received INR 600 crore to ease internal traffic movement. The Vitthalwadi-Kalyan Ahilyanagar elevated road has been given INR 200 crore to reduce bottlenecks in densely populated stretches.

The Airoli-Katai Freeway Phase 3 project has been allotted INR 900 crore, which is expected to improve connectivity between Navi Mumbai and the Kalyan belt. Improved road infrastructure is also intended to support last-mile connectivity to upcoming metro stations and reduce dependence on rail travel for shorter distances.

The Kalyan-Dombivli-Badlapur belt has witnessed steady residential growth over the past decade due to relatively lower property prices compared to Mumbai and Thane. However, transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with rising population and housing demand. Daily overcrowding on suburban trains has been a long-standing concern, especially during peak hours.

Public representatives from the region stated that sustained follow-up with the state government and MMRDA helped secure these allocations. Officials indicated that the focus is on creating parallel transport options so that commuter pressure is distributed more evenly across rail, metro and road networks.
