The Aqua Line of the Noida Metro Rail Corporation has seen a fourfold increase in daily commuters since its launch in early 2019, emerging as a vital transport link between Noida and Greater Noida. Ridership peaked in late 2025, driven by events like the UP International Trade Show. While connectivity between Sector 51 and Sector 52 stations remains a concern, authorities are developing a skywalk. Multiple extensions are in planning and approval stages, with one recently cleared for development. The line continues to strengthen urban transit and regional mobility.
The Aqua Line of Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC), connecting Sector 51 in Noida to Depot Station in Greater Noida, has grown significantly since its inauguration in early 2019. Initial ridership of 11,625 commuters has surged to an average of 63,079 daily passengers by January 2026, marking around a 442% increase. Covering 29 km with 21 stations, the line is a key mode of transport for residents and professionals commuting between corporate offices, residential areas, and commercial hubs.
In the early months after its launch, the line struggled to attract commuters, with figures rising modestly to 17,032 by March 2020. After services resumed in September 2020 following pandemic-related closures, ridership began a steady upward trend. By November 2022, average daily commuters had reached 43,430, showing consistent growth as the city's population and economic activity expanded.
The line recorded its highest monthly ridership in September 2025, with an average of 74,370 daily users. This surge coincided with the UP International Trade Show, which drew additional commuter traffic to the city.
Connectivity between nearby metro stations remains an area of focus. Commuters have noted the gap between Sector 51 Aqua Line and Sector 52 Delhi Metro Blue Line stations. The Noida Authority is constructing a skywalk to link the two, but the project has been delayed due to a structural pillar near Sector 52. Officials are working on resolving the issue, but a revised completion date has not been announced.
Looking forward, NMRC plans to expand the Aqua Line through three corridors: from Sector 51 to Knowledge Park V, from Sector 51 to Sector 142, and from Depot Station to Boraki. While approvals for the first two projects are pending at the central level, the Depot-to-Boraki extension has recently been cleared, and tenders will soon be issued for construction. These extensions are expected to further enhance connectivity and support commuter growth.
The Aqua Line's development comes amid broader urban transit investments in the region, aimed at improving mobility and integrating metro services with other transport networks. The expansion projects reflect a continuing effort to strengthen public transport, reduce road congestion, and facilitate smoother travel for the growing population of Noida and Greater Noida.
