Synopsis

French drugmaker Sanofi on Monday announced plans to expand its global capability centre (GCC) in Hyderabad, increasing its workforce to more than 4,500 employees from the current 2,600. The expansion will be backed by a multi-hundred-million-dollar investment, though the company did not specify the exact amount or hiring timeline. In 2024, Sanofi had committed to investing 400 million euros ($474.60 million) in its India GCC by the end of the decade. The move reflects the growing importance of India as a hub for multinational GCCs, which are evolving into innovation-driven centres supporting research, artificial intelligence and data capabilities. The announcement comes ahead of the BioAsia conference in Hyderabad, where global pharmaceutical leaders are set to discuss India's expanding role in the global pharma ecosystem.

French drugmaker Sanofi said on Monday it will expand its global capability centre (GCC) in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad, increasing its workforce to more than 4,500 employees from over 2,600 currently.

The biopharmaceutical company said the expansion would be supported by a multi-hundred-million investment, but did not disclose the exact amount. It also did not specify a timeframe for the hiring.

In 2024, Sanofi said it would invest USD 474.60 million in its India GCC by the end of the decade.

Multinational companies are increasingly setting up global capability centres in India. These centres have evolved from low-cost back-office operations into high-value innovation hubs supporting functions such as finance, operations, research and development.

According to real estate consultancy Anarock, India hosts more than 1,700 GCCs employing over 1.9 million professionals. The consultancy projects the GCC market to reach $105 billion - $110 billion by 2030, expanding at a 10% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), with the number of centres potentially exceeding 2,400 by then.

Sanofi Healthcare India, part of the global group, said the new hiring would include specialists in research and development, artificial intelligence and data innovation, data analytics, medical affairs, commercial capabilities and corporate functions.

The announcement comes as Hyderabad prepares to host its annual BioAsia conference on February 17 and 18. Executives from global drugmakers including Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk and Merck are expected to participate in discussions on expanding research and the growth outlook for India's pharmaceutical market.
