Kim Jong Un inaugurated a new housing district in Pyongyang for families of North Korean soldiers who died during overseas military missions, state media reported. He said the project symbolised the sacrifice of the fallen and was completed early to provide comfort to bereaved families. Photographs showed Kim accompanied by his daughter, Ju Ae, whose growing public role continues to draw attention. The move follows North Korea's deployment of troops to Ukraine under a defence pact with Russia and comes ahead of the upcoming Workers Party congress.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over the opening of a newly completed housing district in Pyongyang dedicated to families of soldiers who died during overseas military operations, according to state media KCNA. The ceremony was held as part of a broader effort by the leadership to publicly honour military personnel killed while serving abroad.
During his address at the event, Kim said the residential area was intended to reflect the spirit and sacrifice of the fallen troops. He conveyed that the homes were built so bereaved families could continue their lives with dignity and pride in the service rendered by their relatives. Kim also noted that he personally urged officials to complete the project ahead of schedule, believing that an earlier handover might offer some comfort to those who had lost family members.
State-released photographs showed Kim accompanied by his daughter, Ju Ae, as they met and consoled relatives of the deceased soldiers and toured the newly built homes. Ju Ae has increasingly appeared alongside her father at public events over the past three years, ranging from missile launches to military commemorations and national celebrations. Her frequent presence has fuelled speculation among observers about her growing prominence within the country's leadership narrative.
The housing inauguration follows North Korea's deployment of troops abroad under a mutual defence arrangement with Russia. In 2024, Pyongyang sent approximately 14,000 soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces against Ukraine. According to assessments by South Korean, Ukrainian and Western sources, more than 6,000 North Korean soldiers were killed during the conflict.
In recent months, the North Korean leadership has organised several public events to commemorate war casualties. These have included ceremonies in Pyongyang marking military sacrifice and the unveiling of a new memorial complex featuring large sculptures of soldiers, underscoring the state's emphasis on loyalty and service.
The housing project was unveiled shortly before the Ninth Congress of the ruling Workers' Party, scheduled to take place later this month. The congress is expected to be a key political event, where achievements, internal priorities and future policy directions will be highlighted under Kim's leadership.
