Synopsis

Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has introduced Gate Z, a new social lounge at Terminal 2, designed to reflect the changing travel habits of younger and experience-focused passengers. Unlike traditional airport lounges, the space allows travellers to eat, work, relax and socialise in one open setting. With themed zones such as a cafbar, diner and amphitheatre, Gate Z focuses on flexibility rather than exclusivity. The initiative aligns with the airport's wider effort to create experience-led infrastructure as passenger dwell times increase.

Kempegowda International Airport has opened Gate Z, a newly developed social lounge at Terminal 2, aimed at passengers who prefer flexible and interactive spaces while waiting for flights. The lounge moves away from the conventional airport waiting model and offers an open environment where travellers can spend time working, dining or simply relaxing before departure.

Located next to the 080 International Lounge, Gate Z has been planned as a shared space rather than a premium, access-restricted facility. The design encourages movement and interaction, with open seating layouts, curved furniture and clearly defined zones that allow passengers to choose how they want to use the space depending on their travel needs.

The lounge features several themed areas, including Bubble & Brew, which functions as a cafbar, and The Sipping Lounge, offering informal seating for longer stays. A retro-styled Subway Diner with live food counters has been added to cater to quick meals, while the Amphizone, an amphitheatre-style area, is intended for screenings, small performances and pop-up activities within the terminal.

Airport officials have indicated that the concept was shaped around longer dwell times at modern airports and the growing demand for spaces that support both productivity and leisure. Technology-enabled features and sustainable design elements have also been integrated into the lounge to match the overall approach adopted for Terminal 2.

The name Gate Z was selected through a nationwide contest that invited suggestions from students and young professionals across the country. This exercise was intended to create a sense of connection with the primary user group the space aims to serve, while also reinforcing the airport's focus on inclusive passenger engagement.
