Kochi Metro Rail Ltd's all electric Metro Connect feeder bus service has completed its first year, carrying around 14 lakh passengers. The service runs 15 electric buses across six major routes, connecting residential areas with Metro Rail and Water Metro stations, strengthening last mile connectivity. Supported by seven charging stations and a dedicated depot, the initiative has increased ridership and revenue by about 15%. Key routes like Aluva CIAL, Medical College, and Kadavanthra-Panampilly Nagar have seen strong usage, reflecting the growing demand for integrated and sustainable public transport in Kochi.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has successfully completed a year of operations for its all electric Metro Connect feeder bus network. Since its launch early last year, the service has transported around 14 lakh passengers, providing essential last mile connectivity to the city's Metro Rail and Water Metro networks. The network addresses gaps in urban mobility, making it easier for commuters to reach key transit points efficiently.
The service operates 15 electric buses across six major routes, covering an average of 2,300 km daily and accumulating nearly 7 lakh km since inception. These buses are supported by seven charging stations and a dedicated depot established in partnership with the Kerala government and funded by the French agency AFD. Key corridors, including Aluva CIAL (airport), Medical College, and Kadavanthra-Panampilly Nagar, have consistently recorded high ridership, highlighting the importance of these routes for daily commuters.
KMRL has leveraged data-driven scheduling to optimise bus frequency, reduce downtime, and manage charging cycles efficiently. This approach has contributed to a 15% growth in both passenger numbers and revenue. Real-time monitoring using vehicle telematics and fare integration allows the authorities to track operations closely and respond to commuter needs promptly.
The feeder buses have strengthened ridership across the metro rail and Water Metro services by providing seamless last-mile access. Regular feedback from commuters helps KMRL refine schedules, adjust routes, and plan future expansions.
Looking ahead, KMRL plans to introduce live GTFS-based tracking of buses, enabling passengers to check real-time locations and expected arrival times. In-vehicle passenger information systems are also being considered to improve the travel experience. These upgrades aim to enhance reliability and encourage greater use of sustainable public transport in Kochi.
