Bhubaneswar is set to modernize its traffic signal infrastructure as part of a major push to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in the rapidly expanding city. The proposal, spearheaded by the municipal corporation in coordination with the traffic police, calls for the installation of adaptive traffic signal systems, upgraded controllers, and real-time monitoring capabilities at key intersections. The move aims to reduce travel times, improve road safety and better manage peak-hour traffic flows through intelligent signal timing adjustments based on live conditions. The project also includes enhanced pedestrian facilities, upgraded signage, and integration with the city's broader transport management systems. By adopting next-generation traffic signal technology, Bhubaneswar expects to support sustainable urban transport and create smoother, safer commutes for residents.
Bhubaneswar is planning a major upgrade to its traffic signal infrastructure as part of efforts to improve urban mobility and tackle growing congestion. City officials, in collaboration with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and local traffic police, are moving ahead with a proposal to modernize traffic signals across a number of strategic intersections and high-volume corridors.
Under the planned upgrade, the city will shift from conventional fixed-time signal systems to adaptive traffic signal technology, which can adjust signal phases in real time based on prevailing traffic conditions. This smart signal infrastructure aims to reduce waiting times at intersections, optimise traffic flow during peak hours, and improve overall road efficiency. By leveraging real-time data from sensors and cameras, adaptive systems can better manage changing traffic patterns throughout the day.
The proposal includes the installation of upgraded signal controllers, advanced detectors, CCTV cameras, and centralised monitoring tools. Together, these components will allow traffic engineers to monitor live conditions and implement dynamic signal timing adjustments. The centralized traffic management approach is expected to make Bhubaneswar's road network more responsive and resilient, particularly in areas with high vehicle volumes and mixed traffic flows.
In addition to adaptive signals, the plan involves enhancements to pedestrian infrastructure, including improved crosswalks, countdown timers, and better signage to ensure safe and accessible movement for non-motorised users. Enhanced signage and lane markings will further support orderly traffic movement and contribute to road safety.
Officials have emphasized that the modernization of traffic signals forms part of a broader strategy to adopt smart mobility solutions and integrate them with Bhubaneswar's urban transport framework. As the city continues to grow economically and demographically, upgrading critical transport infrastructure is seen as essential to maintaining quality of life and supporting sustainable urban development.
By embracing technology-driven signal management and real-time monitoring, Bhubaneswar aims to reduce congestion, shorten commute times, and enhance the efficiency of its road network outcomes that can benefit daily commuters, commercial traffic and emergency services alike. The project is still in planning stages, and detailed timelines for implementation will be shared once approvals and procurement are finalized.
