Synopsis

Southern Railway is set to revamp the retiring rooms and dormitories at MGR Chennai Central station with a star-hotel-style makeover aimed at offering passengers a more comfortable short-stay experience. The station's existing facilities including nine air-conditioned rooms, a 23-bed male dormitory and a five-bed female dormitory at the concourse level will be modernised, and unused space will be developed to enhance premium stay options. The project will be executed under a renovate, operate, maintain, and transfer (ROMT) model, with management outsourced to a hospitality-experienced agency through an open tender. The upgraded facilities are intended to meet contemporary comfort standards for travellers arriving early, departing late, or in transit, while retaining convenient access to commercial amenities and platforms.

Southern Railway has announced a major upgrade to the retiring rooms and dormitory facilities at MGR Chennai Central station, aiming to provide passengers with a short-stay experience comparable to star-hotel comfort. The initiative seeks to modernise existing accommodation and develop additional space to better serve rail travellers needing rest before departure, after arrival, or during long layovers.

The station currently offers nine air-conditioned retiring rooms alongside a 23-bed AC male dormitory and a five-bed AC female dormitory located at the concourse level. These facilities, traditionally managed by the railways, will now be transformed to feature enhanced interiors and amenities aligned with contemporary expectations for comfort and convenience. Unused areas within the station concourse will also be developed to expand premium short-stay options.

Under the planned renovate, operate, maintain, and transfer (ROMT) model, the upgraded accommodation will be outsourced to an external operator with proven hospitality sector experience. Southern Railway will invite bids through an open tender process, allowing qualified agencies to develop and manage the facilities over a contract period of five years, extendable up to an additional four years. The ROMT approach is intended to ensure professional upkeep and continuous service quality while relieving the railways of day-to-day operational responsibilities.

Officials said the modernised retiring rooms will provide travellers with a more comfortable and pleasant environment, bridging the gap between conventional station lodging and contemporary hospitality standards. Conveniently located near commercial outlets, eateries and key amenities, the upgraded spaces will remain easily accessible to passengers moving to and from station platforms.

While welcoming the upgrade, some local observers have expressed concern about whether the enhanced facilities will remain affordable, especially if pricing aligns with premium standards. Ensuring accessibility for a wide range of passengers will be an important consideration as the project develops.

The plan forms part of Indian Railways broader efforts to improve passenger amenities at major stations nationwide by leveraging private-sector participation and modern service standards.
