The Ministry of Civil Aviation reviewed the ongoing Phase II expansion of Chennai International Airport's T2 terminal, urging officials to address delays and ensure timely completion. The New Integrated Terminal Building, covering 86,135 sqm, aims to increase passenger handling capacity to 35 million annually and enhance passenger movement and accessibility. Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha instructed the Airports Authority of India (AAI), contractor L&T, and the project management team to meet immediately and resolve pending issues. The expansion builds on earlier upgrades, supporting growing domestic and international traffic in the region.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) conducted a review of the Phase II expansion of the New Integrated Terminal Building (T2) at Chennai International Airport. Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha chaired the meeting and highlighted that projects of national importance must be completed without delays. He directed the Airports Authority of India (AAI), contractor L&T, and the Project Management Consultant (PMC) to convene urgently and address pending issues to ensure the T2 expansion stays on schedule.
The Phase II expansion covers an area of approximately 86,135 sqm and is designed to raise the airport's passenger handling capacity to 35 million passengers annually. The development focuses on smoother passenger movement, improved accessibility, and accommodating the increasing air traffic demand in southern India. The project also aims to enhance overall passenger experience through better facilities and efficient flow within the terminal.
Past phases of development at Chennai International Airport, including the completion of Phase I, increased capacity from 23 million to around 30 million passengers per year. The current expansion is part of a broader plan to modernise the airport and strengthen its position as a major aviation hub. Delays in Phase II have been influenced by weather-related disruptions and pandemic-related challenges, making timely completion critical.
The ministry reiterated the need to complete all facilities, including aerobridges, passenger amenities, and access infrastructure, as part of the expansion. Clear instructions were given to prioritise the project, remove bottlenecks, and meet timelines. Successful completion will support both domestic and international operations, ensuring Chennai Airport can handle rising passenger numbers efficiently.
