The Delhi government has unveiled a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving living conditions in informal settlements across the capital, with a total allocation of around INR 327 crore for jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) cluster development projects. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at a Republic Day event, where she hosted representatives of slum communities and reaffirmed the administration's commitment to enhancing basic amenities. Works already approved include public convenience complexes and cement-concrete road infrastructure, with a further INR 700 crore earmarked for broader JJ cluster development covering housing, sanitation, health and social welfare. Officials said the comprehensive plan will fast-track essential upgrades such as drains, toilets, parks and community facilities to elevate the quality of life in these areas. The Delhi government has announced a significant development push for slum and jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) clusters across the capital city, with an initial funding allocation of approximately INR 327 crore aimed at improving basic infrastructure and living conditions for residents. The initiative was highlighted during a Republic Day programme hosted by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at her official residence, where she shared a meal with community representatives and outlined the administration's strategy to address long-standing challenges faced by informal settlement populations. As part of the first phase of works, administrative approvals have been granted for INR 225 crore of public convenience complexes across JJ clusters, covering 476 separate works, with contracts worth INR 81 crore already awarded. Additionally, INR 102 crore has been approved for cement-concrete (CC) lane and road works in 254 locations, of which projects valued at INR 63 crore have been initiated. These infrastructure improvements are intended to address gaps in sanitation, internal connectivity and basic urban services in densely populated informal settlements.
Ms Gupta said the government is working with full commitment to raise living standards for slum residents, noting that a broader dedicated budget of around INR 700 crore has been earmarked for JJ cluster development. Officials described a comprehensive plan to accelerate improvements in essential amenities, including drains, roads, toilets, parks and settlement development centres, as well as access to social services. These upgrades aim to alleviate poor living conditions and provide a better environment for families residing in these areas.
The development programme also encompasses initiatives to improve access to food and healthcare through schemes such as Atal Canteens and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs tailored for JJ cluster residents. Urban development ministers, civic agency officials and representatives from community organisations attended the Republic Day event, underscoring the multi-agency effort to deliver tangible outcomes on the ground.
This push reflects the city's focus on integrating informal settlements within broader urban development frameworks by upgrading infrastructure and services in a phased manner, supporting residents with improved living conditions and access to essential amenities.
