Synopsis

The Odisha government has announced plans to upgrade the Berhampur & Jeypore road into a six-lane economic corridor with an estimated investment of around INR 6,000 crore. The project is intended to improve connectivity across southern Odisha and strengthen links with other regions of the state. Alongside this highway expansion, the state has proposed new urban road projects in Berhampur, preparation of a Greater Berhampur development plan, and the creation of food streets within the municipal area, reflecting a broader push for infrastructure and urban development.

The Odisha government has decided to upgrade the Berhampur-Jeypore road into a six-lane highway, positioning it as an economic corridor to improve regional connectivity and support economic activity in southern Odisha. The project is estimated to cost around INR 6,000 crore and is expected to significantly ease the movement of people and goods between key urban and industrial centres in the region.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi shared details of the project while addressing a school function in Berhampur. He said the expanded corridor would help connect the eastern and southern parts of Odisha more effectively and would also improve access to northern and western regions with support from the central government. The road upgrade is seen as a key step in strengthening the state's transport network, especially in areas that have long faced connectivity constraints.

In addition to the highway project, the state government has approved funding of about INR 52.17 crore for the construction and improvement of 10 important roads within Berhampur city. These works are aimed at easing local traffic movement and improving overall urban mobility. The government has also directed officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report for the proposed Greater Berhampur plan, which will include nearby panchayat areas to support planned urban expansion and better civic infrastructure.

The administration has further announced plans to develop food streets in different locations under the Berhampur Municipal Corporation. These spaces are expected to provide organised vending areas and improve the city's public amenities.

The road and urban development initiatives form part of Odisha's wider infrastructure push. In recent years, the state has seen increased investment in national and state highways, with several large road projects approved to strengthen connectivity, logistics, and regional development.
