Madhya Pradesh has outlined a large road infrastructure programme aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic growth across the state. The plan includes over 3,300 km of expressways and major corridors with an estimated investment of INR 36,483 crore, alongside nearly 948 km of national highways to be built by NHAI. Key routes are expected to reduce travel time, strengthen logistics, and improve access for agriculture, industry, and tourism, while also addressing wildlife protection and rural connectivity needs.
Madhya Pradesh has laid out an extensive road development roadmap intended to improve movement across the state and support long-term economic activity. Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) have indicated that road infrastructure is being positioned as a core driver for investment, trade, and regional balance, rather than only as a transport utility.
The state government plans to develop six major expressways and progress corridors spanning a combined length of 3,368 km, with a projected investment of INR 36,483 crore. These include the Narmada Pragati Path, Vindhya Expressway, Malwa Nimar Vikas Path, Atal Pragati Path, Bundelkhand Vikas Path and Madhya Bharat Vikas Path. The corridors are designed to improve access between industrial zones, agricultural regions and urban centres, while also easing congestion on existing roads.
Officials have stated that these projects are targeted for completion by mid-2028. Once operational, the routes are expected to reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower logistics costs for businesses operating within and across the state. Improved road access is also expected to support tourism movement, particularly to heritage and wildlife destinations.
In parallel, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to construct around 948 km of national highways in Madhya Pradesh at an estimated cost of about INR 28,000 crore. These projects aim to strengthen interstate connectivity and improve freight movement. Strategic corridors such as Gwalior, Nagpur, Indore, Bhopal and Jabalpur Bhopal have been identified as critical links for industrial and regional development.
A notable element of the programme is the inclusion of wildlife-sensitive infrastructure. Madhya Pradesh has planned a dedicated tiger corridor in coordination with NHAI, incorporating underpasses and controlled-speed zones to reduce animal movement disruption. This approach reflects the state's effort to balance infrastructure expansion with environmental protection, particularly in forest-rich regions.
Under the Hybrid Annuity Model, the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation is preparing multiple projects covering about 285 km, with an estimated investment of INR 15,000 crore. These projects are intended to strengthen secondary road networks that support industrial supply chains and regional trade.
Rural connectivity is another key focus area. The state plans to construct 11,310 km of new rural roads to link villages with markets, health facilities and administrative centres. Officials have indicated that quality control and timely execution will remain priorities, with increased use of modern construction and monitoring techniques.
The current push builds on earlier investments in highway upgrades and externally funded projects aimed at improving road safety and climate resilience. Given Madhya Pradesh's central location, improved road infrastructure is seen as essential for integrating the state more closely with national economic corridors and neighbouring markets.
