The National Highways Authority of India has decided to remove the mandatory Know Your Vehicle verification for new FASTag issuances in the passenger vehicle category from February 2026. The move follows repeated complaints from vehicle owners about delays and disruptions caused by post-activation KYV checks. Under the revised process, KYV will no longer be carried out as a routine step and will be applied only in specific cases such as misuse or incorrect tagging. Banks issuing FASTags will now be responsible for stricter vehicle verification before activation.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification will no longer be mandatory for new FASTags issued to cars, jeeps, and vans from February 2026. The decision has been taken to streamline FASTag issuance and reduce inconvenience faced by private vehicle owners after tag activation.
KYV was originally introduced to ensure that FASTags were correctly mapped to vehicle registration numbers, helping prevent misuse and revenue leakage at toll plazas. However, NHAI observed that the process often led to repeated follow-ups and delays even when vehicle owners had submitted valid documents at the time of purchase. In several cases, FASTags were flagged after activation, causing disruption to regular highway travel.
Under the revised system, KYV checks will be conducted only when specific issues are identified. These include cases of incorrect issuance, suspected misuse, or situations where FASTags are found to be loose or wrongly affixed. Routine KYV verification for all new passenger vehicle FASTags will no longer be required.
To ensure accountability, NHAI has shifted the responsibility of vehicle verification entirely to FASTag issuer banks. Banks will be required to validate vehicle details against the VAHAN database before activating any new FASTag. If vehicle data is unavailable on VAHAN, banks must verify details using the vehicle's Registration Certificate and will remain fully responsible for the accuracy of the information.
The updated process applies to FASTags issued through both physical points of sale and digital platforms. NHAI expects the change to improve user experience while maintaining system integrity through stronger pre-activation checks.
