Synopsis

The Union Cabinet has approved the development of a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway corridor connecting Nashik, Solapur and Akkalkot in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of INR 19,142 crore. The project will be implemented on a build-operate-transfer (toll) basis and is designed to significantly cut travel time and distance across the region. By linking key expressways and national highways, the corridor is expected to improve freight movement, strengthen regional connectivity, and support economic activity across several districts in the state.

The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway corridor linking Nashik, Solapur and Akkalkot in Maharashtra, with a total capital outlay of INR 19,142 crore. The 374-kilometre-long project will be developed under the build-operate-transfer (toll) model and is aimed at improving long-distance road connectivity across central and southern parts of the state.

The proposed corridor is expected to bring a substantial reduction in travel time and distance. According to official estimates, the new highway will cut travel time by nearly 17 hours while shortening the overall route by about 201 kilometres. The road is being designed for average speeds of around 60 kilometres per hour, with a maximum design speed of up to 100 kilometres per hour, allowing smoother and uninterrupted movement for both passenger and commercial vehicles.

The corridor will be integrated with several major road networks to improve regional and national connectivity. It will connect with the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near the Vadhavan port interchange, link to the Agra-Mumbai corridor at Nashik, and connect with NH-60 and the Samruddhi Mahamarg. These connections are expected to ease traffic congestion on existing routes and improve access to key economic centres.

Officials have indicated that the project will play an important role in strengthening logistics and freight movement. Improved connectivity is expected to benefit industrial clusters and freight nodes under the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation framework, helping reduce transportation time and costs for goods movement across Maharashtra and adjoining regions.

The highway project is also expected to generate significant employment during construction and allied activities. Large-scale infrastructure work along the corridor is likely to create direct and indirect job opportunities across districts such as Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Dharashiv and Solapur, supporting local economies along the route.

The approval aligns with the government's broader infrastructure push under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated transport planning and faster execution of critical connectivity projects across the country.
