The Maharashtra government is finalizing a regional plan for New Mahabaleshwar in the Satara district, aimed at alleviating congestion in the existing Mahabaleshwar hill station. Managed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the plan has expanded from 58 to 235 villages to integrate surrounding areas into a comprehensive development strategy. The initiative includes constructing nine-meter-wide roads and designated community zones, reflecting a modern infrastructure vision. However, environmentalists oppose the plan, citing risks to wildlife and biodiversity, particularly in forested areas. The forest department's involvement is pending, and local residents and environmentalists are concerned about balancing economic growth with environmental protection. The final development plan is expected to be unveiled soon.
The Maharashtra government is nearing the final stages of a regional plan for New Mahabaleshwar, a proposed hill station located in the Satara district. This initiative aims to relieve congestion in the popular tourist destination of Mahabaleshwar, which has long been a favourite among travellers seeking a serene getaway. Officials have stated that the comprehensive development plan will be unveiled within the next month.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has been designated as the planning authority for this project. Originally, the development zone included only 58 villages; however, this number has expanded significantly to encompass 235 villages within the plan. This change reflects a broader vision to integrate the surrounding areas into a cohesive development strategy. MSRDC managing director Anil Gaikwad confirmed that the primary goal is to formulate a well-rounded urban plan that addresses both growth and environmental concerns.
As part of this process, the MSRDC has engaged actively with stakeholders, conducting multiple meetings and advanced surveys, including drone and LIDAR assessments of the area. The designated region, which includes parts of Jawali, Patan, and Satara tehsils, will see the construction of nine-meter-wide roads and designated zones for various community amenities. This approach seeks to create a modern infrastructure network that enhances accessibility without overwhelming local resources.
The project has a historical component as well; the idea of developing New Mahabaleshwar was first proposed in the early 2000s but faced numerous delays. Recently revived by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who has personal ties to the region, this plan is seen as a way to bring progress to his native village of Dare.
While officials assure the public that environmental concerns are a priority, with commitments to sustainable development and ecological tourism, there is significant opposition from local environmental groups. Activists argue that the expansion of development into forested areas poses a serious threat to local wildlife and biodiversity.
The forest department has not been included in the planning discussions so far and is expected to raise objections regarding the inclusion of forested regions within the development area. Many local residents and environmentalists worry that the initiative may prioritize economic growth over environmental protection, jeopardising the delicate balance that sustains Mahabaleshwar's natural beauty.
As the release date for the development plan approaches, community members and stakeholders remain watchful. They hope that the government can successfully balance the demand for tourism and infrastructure with the need to protect the rich natural heritage of New Mahabaleshwar. The outcome of this project may set a precedent for future development initiatives in ecologically sensitive areas across Maharashtra and beyond.
