The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has addressed recent concerns regarding cracks on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) bridge. The MMRDA clarifies that the cracks are not located on the main bridge structure but on a specific section of the approach road connecting MTHL from Ulwe towards Mumbai.
On June 20th, 2024, the MMRDA's Operation and Maintenance team conducted a routine inspection and discovered minor cracks on the asphalt surface of the approach road. These cracks were found near the edges at three specific locations on Ramp 5, which connects Ulwe in Navi Mumbai to Mumbai.
The MMRDA assures the public that these cracks are superficial and do not pose any threat to the structural integrity of the MTHL bridge itself. They are categorised as minor longitudinal cracks in the asphalt pavement, a common occurrence that can be effectively repaired.
M/s Strabag, the contractor responsible for Package 4 of the project, has already begun repairs on the affected sections. The repairs are expected to be completed within 24 hours and will be carried out without causing any disruptions to traffic flow on the MTHL.
The MMRDA emphasises its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety on the MTHL project. They will continue to conduct regular inspections and address any maintenance needs promptly.
