The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) is intensifying efforts to collect INR 19.1 crore in unpaid property taxes from 2,900 defaulters across five zones, following a revenue shortfall in the 2023-24 financial year. Defaulters include residential properties, hotels, and industrial units. GMC has begun issuing notices and may halt essential services like garbage collection and water supply for non-payment. Since August, the GMC has digitised the tax payment process, enabling residents to pay online. While INR 28.9 crore has been recovered from 1,562 defaulters, GMC aims to collect the remaining dues to fund vital services and infrastructure improvements in Ghaziabad.
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) is intensifying its efforts to collect property taxes from residents and businesses. This move comes after a shortfall in revenue during the last financial year (2023-24) due to a significant number of defaulters.
GMC data reveals that nearly 2,900 property owners across Ghaziabad's five zones failed to pay their property taxes in the previous financial year. This resulted in a shortfall of INR 19.1 crore, representing uncollected revenue that could have been used to fund essential services like road maintenance, sanitation, and water supply.
The list of defaulters includes not only residential properties but also big hotels and industrial units. The corporation has already begun issuing notices to these 2,900 defaulters, warning them of potential consequences for non-payment.
GMC has clarified that if property taxes remain unpaid, they will resort to stricter measures. This could include stopping essential services like garbage collection and water supply to the defaulters' properties.
In an effort to encourage timely payments, the corporation has made the property tax payment process completely digital since last August. Residents can now conveniently pay their taxes online using credit cards, debit cards, UPI, and RTGS.
Property tax is a crucial source of revenue for Ghaziabad's local government. It helps fund essential services like road maintenance, sanitation, streetlights, and water supply, all of which contribute to a better quality of life for residents. By collecting these taxes, GMC can ensure a well-maintained city with proper infrastructure and amenities.
The corporation has successfully recovered taxes from about 1,562 defaulters, collecting INR 28.9 crore. However, their focus remains on collecting dues from the outstanding 1,338 properties. By recovering these unpaid taxes of INR 19.1 crore, GMC can improve its financial situation and continue providing essential services to the residents of Ghaziabad.
