Synopsis

Infosys, India's second-largest IT firm, reveals in its latest ESG report a significant shift towards remote work. With 84% of employees opting for flexible work options in FY24; up from 75% in FY23 and peaking at 97% during FY22; the company emphasises a commitment to adapt to evolving work cultures. By 2030, Infosys aims for 33% of work to be remote or flexible, reducing environmental impact and enhancing accessibility for talent in tier-2 cities. Strategic expansions in Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore further support this initiative, aligning Infosys with a progressive workplace model that prioritises employee well-being and operational efficiency.

While many tech companies are pushing for a return to the office, Infosys, India's second-largest IT giant with over 2.6 lakh employees, is taking a different approach. Their latest ESG report reveals a strong commitment to flexible work options for employees.

The report highlights a significant increase in remote work adoption among Infosys employees. In the financial year 2024 (FY24), 84% of the workforce leveraged remote work options, compared to 75% in FY23. This represents a 9% increase year-on-year and signifies a clear shift towards a more flexible work culture. Notably, the peak of remote work adoption was during the pandemic in FY22, when 97% of employees worked remotely.

Infosys' embrace of remote work goes beyond employee preference. The company aims to achieve an ambitious target of 33% of its work being delivered through flexible or remote work options by 2030. This strategy not only caters to a changing work culture but also has a positive environmental impact. By reducing the need for employees, particularly those in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, to commute daily to large offices in major cities, Infosys is contributing to lower pollution levels and water stress in these urban areas.

To further support remote work options and tap into a wider talent pool, Infosys has strategically expanded its physical presence beyond major metros. The company opened new offices in Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) in FY24. These smaller offices in tier-2 cities benefit employees by reducing travel time by an estimated two hours daily and create opportunities for local talent who may not have been able to relocate to larger cities for work. Additionally, Infosys has established smaller offices within tier-1 cities like Bengaluru (Infosys NorthGate office) to further minimise commute times for employees based there.

Infosys is actively transforming its existing workspaces to accommodate a hybrid work model. These reimagined offices cater to both in-person collaboration and remote work needs. The goal is to create a work environment that enhances productivity, employee well-being, and resource efficiency. Infosys highlights that a transformed workplace aligns with the "new normal" and fosters a positive work experience for employees.

Infosys' commitment to flexibility sets them apart in the tech industry. This forward-thinking approach not only benefits their employees by offering a work-life balance and reducing commuting stress, but also promotes a more sustainable future for Indian cities by reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.
