This land acquisition marks a significant investment by Microsoft in the Indian data centre market. Industry sources suggest the company plans to develop one of the biggest data centers in the region on this newly acquired property. Located about 40 kilometres from Hyderabad's main city centre, the land reportedly came at a premium price, reflecting Microsoft's strong interest in the location. This new data centre will join Microsoft's existing network of data centers in Pune (established in 2017), Mumbai (established in 2015), and Chennai (established in 2016), which have been instrumental in supporting Microsoft's cloud services and products across India for the past five to eight years. With the addition of the Hyderabad data centre, Microsoft is well-positioned to meet the ever-growing demand for cloud computing solutions in India.
There are further indications of Microsoft's growing presence in Hyderabad. Sources report that the company has acquired two additional land parcels in the city, potentially for further data centre development or other business purposes. Hyderabad's strategic location in southern India, coupled with its skilled workforce and well-developed infrastructure, makes it an attractive hub for major tech companies like Microsoft. In addition to data centers, Microsoft already has a well-established India Development Centre (IDC) spread across 54 acres in Hyderabad. These IDCs play a vital role in developing and improving Microsoft's software products like Azure, Windows, Office, and Bing, with over 7,000 employees contributing to the company's global innovation efforts.
Microsoft's expansion plans in India extend beyond data centers and traditional office spaces. The company has been actively expanding its presence in India's flexible office space segment over the past two years.
