In April, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) earned INR 11.76 crore in property taxes and waste collection costs, representing an 88.16% increase over the previous year. The increase in revenue can be ascribed to PMC's 5% rebate incentive for timely filers and the use of online payment platforms. Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar emphasised the tremendous increase in online tax payments, with 58% of taxpayers using digital transactions. PMC's creative initiatives, such as QR code-enabled demand notifications and door-to-door visits, demonstrate its dedication to increasing tax compliance and revenue collection.
In April, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) accomplished an outstanding feat by collecting INR 11.76 crore in property taxes and waste collection costs. This statistic indicates a noteworthy 8.16% rise over the tax collection during the same time in the previous fiscal year. With almost 2.5 lakh holdings in the municipal territory, PMC has set a revenue target of INR 200 crore for the current fiscal year, a significant increase from the INR 155 crore received in the previous fiscal year.
The rise in tax collection can be attributed to PMC's initiative of offering a 5% rebate to prompt property taxpayers. This incentive has incentivized timely tax payments, leading to a substantial increase in revenue. Additionally, PMC's efforts to streamline the tax payment process through online platforms have played a pivotal role in boosting tax collection. An increasing number of taxpayers are utilising these digital platforms, with 58% opting for online payments in April, compared to just 38% during the same period last year.
Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar emphasised the convenience and accessibility provided by PMC's online facilities, including printed QR codes and the Patna Municipal Corporation website. These initiatives have facilitated tax payments from the comfort of taxpayers' homes, further encouraging compliance with tax regulations. Parashar highlighted the significant growth in online tax payments, with INR 5.54 crore received online from 25,632 taxpayers, a substantial increase from the INR 1.91 crore received through online payments in the previous year.
Moreover, PMC has implemented innovative strategies to enhance tax collection efficiency. For the first time, demand notices containing QR codes have been sent to taxpayers in all 75 wards. This initiative allows taxpayers to conveniently access information about their outstanding tax amounts by scanning the QR code. PMC's door-to-door visits by civic body employees aim to encourage taxpayers to fulfil their tax obligations promptly. These efforts align with PMC's commitment to ensuring maximum tax compliance and revenue generation.
In addition to digital measures, PMC has made tax payment services more accessible by opening tax counters in all six circle offices: Azimabad, Bakerganj, Kankarbagh, New Capital, Patliputra, and Patna City. These tax counters are open from 9am to 7pm, including Sundays and holidays, till the end of June. PMC aspires to meet taxpayers' different demands and encourage timely tax payments by offering multiple payment choices and expanding operation hours.
PMC's thorough tax collecting strategy demonstrates its dedication to effective governance and economic responsibility. PMC aims to maximise income generation and drive sustainable urban development in Patna by utilising digital technologies, implementing new initiatives, and increasing taxpayer outreach. The corporation's proactive actions not only help with tax compliance, but they also contribute to the city's overall welfare and development.
