The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is undertaking an extensive recovery drive to address financial challenges exacerbated by defaults in property tax payments. The corporation aims to earn Rs 300 crore in property taxes for the current financial year and has already added Rs 150 crore to its exchequer as of November 20. To boost collection efforts, the NMC has initiated property attachments and public auctions, utilizing legal provisions to recover outstanding arrears. The proactive approach underscores the municipality's commitment to achieving revenue targets and addressing financial constraints. Zone assistant commissioners have been directed to expedite proceedings for property tax recovery warrants issued to defaulters.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is facing financial challenges, compounded by defaults in property tax payments, prompting the initiation of an extensive recovery drive in the city. The Municipal Corporation has set an ambitious target of earning Rs 300 crore in property taxes for the current financial year. As of November 20, Rs 150 crore has already been added to the corporation's exchequer, reflecting a notable increase of Rs 35 crore compared to the same period in the previous financial year. To boost collection efforts, the NMC has commenced attaching properties and conducting public auctions. Authorized by section 128 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and Taxation Rule 47, the NMC possesses the authority to seize and impound relevant immovable and movable properties, subsequently selling them through auctions to recover outstanding arrears. Additional Municipal Commissioner Anchal Goyal has directed assistant municipal commissioners across all 10 municipal zones to actively pursue the recovery of arrears. Furthermore, zone assistant commissioners have been instructed to expedite proceedings related to property tax recovery warrants issued for 1,356 defaulters, aiming to collect the outstanding property tax amount of Rs 25 crore by December 5, 2023. The Municipal Administration is actively employing legal provisions to recover the dues, utilizing the authority granted by existing legislation. The intensified recovery drive, including property attachments and public auctions, underscores the municipality's commitment to achieving its revenue targets and addressing the financial constraints currently faced. The proactive approach taken by the Additional Municipal Commissioner and the directives issued to zone assistant commissioners highlight a concerted effort to expedite the recovery process and meet the set targets within the stipulated timeframe.
