Railway projects worth over INR 90,000 crore are currently under execution in Odisha, reflecting a large-scale push to expand network capacity and improve connectivity. The programme includes new lines, multi-tracking, station redevelopment and freight infrastructure, alongside efforts to extend rail access to all districts. With a record budget allocation of INR 10,928 crore supporting faster execution, the initiatives aim to ease congestion, strengthen passenger and freight movement, and integrate remote regions with the national rail network. Key projects include a proposed four-line coastal corridor and upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Railway projects worth over INR 90,000 crore are currently under execution in Odisha, as part of a large-scale infrastructure programme aimed at expanding network capacity, improving connectivity and strengthening freight and passenger movement across the state, according to developments reported earlier this week.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the ongoing investments reflect a significant expansion of rail infrastructure, covering new track construction, multi-tracking works, station redevelopment and safety upgrades across multiple districts. The initiatives are supported by a record allocation of INR 10,928 crore in the Union Budget, enabling faster project execution.
The programme includes efforts to extend railway connectivity to all districts in Odisha, with a focus on integrating remote and underserved regions into the broader national rail network. This expansion is expected to improve accessibility and support regional economic activity, particularly in areas with limited transport infrastructure.
Among key projects, a proposed four-line rail corridor between Balasore and Berhampur is aimed at increasing capacity along the coastal belt, which is part of a high-traffic stretch connecting eastern and southern India. The corridor is expected to ease congestion and improve movement of both freight and passenger trains.
In parallel, railway infrastructure development is being extended to western Odisha, including projects along the Junagarh–Nabarangpur–Jeypore–Malkangiri corridor, which are intended to improve connectivity in tribal and aspirational regions. These projects are expected to enhance access to markets and services while supporting regional development.
Station redevelopment forms another key component of the programme, with 59 stations being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The works involve modernisation of station buildings, passenger amenities and circulation areas to improve overall travel experience.
Officials indicated that Odisha has already achieved 100 per cent railway electrification, while network expansion has accelerated significantly in recent years, with substantial additions to track length and ongoing investments in capacity enhancement.
The scale of investment is aligned with broader national infrastructure priorities, where railways remain a key component of capital expenditure, particularly in improving logistics efficiency and reducing transport costs. The ongoing projects are expected to support movement of bulk commodities, industrial goods and passenger traffic across key corridors.
The railway expansion programme is also linked to larger initiatives such as the proposed East–West freight corridor, which will pass through Odisha and strengthen connectivity between eastern and western industrial regions.
Once completed, the projects are expected to enhance network capacity, reduce congestion on existing routes and improve operational efficiency, while supporting economic activity across sectors including mining, manufacturing and logistics.
The development reflects a sustained infrastructure push in Odisha, where rail connectivity is being positioned as a key driver of regional integration, industrial growth and long-term transport efficiency.
