Construction of the proposed greenfield airport at Dagadarthi in Nellore district is expected to commence in the coming months, marking progress in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure expansion. Planned over approximately 1,332 acres, the airport will be developed in phases with an initial passenger handling capacity of around 1.4 million annually. The project is being positioned as part of a broader logistics and industrial ecosystem, with proximity to key ports and highways expected to support cargo movement and regional economic activity. Private sector participation is being finalised through an ongoing bidding process.
Work on the proposed greenfield airport at Dagadarthi in Nellore district is set to begin in the coming months, with authorities advancing preparatory activities including land acquisition, bidding processes and supporting infrastructure, according to developments reported earlier this week.
The airport, planned over approximately 1,332 acres, is being developed as part of Andhra Pradesh’s strategy to expand aviation infrastructure and strengthen multimodal connectivity in the southern region. Officials indicated that construction is expected to commence by mid-year, subject to finalisation of private developer selection through an ongoing request for proposal (RFP) process.
The project has been structured for phased development, with the first phase designed to handle around 1.4 million passengers annually. The long-term master plan allows for expansion up to 15 million passengers, along with provisions for a dedicated cargo terminal to support industrial and export-oriented activity in the region.
The Andhra Pradesh government has already allocated funds to expedite land acquisition and provide basic infrastructure such as road access, power and utilities. Supporting works, including development of alternative access roads and culverts, are being undertaken to ensure connectivity to surrounding villages and facilitate project execution.
The Dagadarthi airport project is expected to become the eighth airport in the state and is positioned as a key component of a larger logistics network linking air, sea and road transport. Its proximity to ports such as Krishnapatnam and Ramayapatnam is expected to improve cargo handling efficiency and reduce logistics costs for industries operating in the region.
Officials have indicated that the airport is intended to support industrial growth, warehousing and allied sectors by improving connectivity for exporters and manufacturers. The development is also expected to generate employment across construction, aviation and logistics services as the project progresses.
The project had faced delays in the past due to land-related issues and changes in development plans, but recent approvals and renewed focus from the state government have revived momentum. The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet had earlier cleared the greenfield airport proposal, enabling further progress on implementation.
The airport is being developed under a public-private partnership framework, with private players invited to participate in development, operation and maintenance. The selection of the concessionaire is expected to be finalised shortly, following which construction activity will be formally initiated.
Industry observers note that the project aligns with the state’s broader infrastructure push aimed at integrating transport networks and supporting industrial corridors. By combining air connectivity with port-led development and highway access, the Dagadarthi airport is expected to contribute to regional economic activity and improve overall logistics efficiency.
Once operational, the airport is expected to enhance passenger connectivity for southern Andhra Pradesh while also supporting cargo movement linked to industrial clusters, agricultural exports and emerging logistics hubs in the Nellore region.
