Synopsis

Chhattisgarh has taken up 774 rural road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, covering around 2,426.875 km with an estimated cost of INR 2,225.44 crore. The projects aim to connect nearly 781 habitations and improve access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and markets. The initiative builds on the state’s ongoing efforts in rural infrastructure, including previous road construction and credit support systems for farmers, while also targeting remote and tribal regions that still lack all-weather connectivity.

Chhattisgarh has initiated 774 rural road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), covering a total length of 2,426.875 km. The projects involve an estimated investment of INR 2,225.44 crore and are aimed at strengthening road connectivity in rural and interior parts of the state.

The new roads are expected to provide all-weather access to around 781 habitations. Improved connectivity is likely to help residents access healthcare facilities, schools, and nearby markets more easily. It is also expected to reduce travel time and improve the movement of agricultural produce and essential goods across regions.

The state government indicated that rural road development remains a priority area, with continued efforts to connect villages that are still not linked through proper road infrastructure. Officials stated that the PMGSY, introduced during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, continues to play a key role in expanding rural connectivity across India, including in states with difficult terrain like Chhattisgarh.

Construction activity on these roads is expected to begin shortly. The deputy chief minister stated that more than 1,300 rural roads have already been completed in the state over the past two years, reflecting steady progress in infrastructure development. A significant portion of this work has focused on tribal and remote regions, where connectivity gaps have been more prominent.

Alongside road development, the state has also expanded its rural support systems. Around 515 new Primary Agricultural Credit Cooperative Societies have been set up recently, taking the total number to 2,573. These societies are intended to improve farmers’ access to seeds, fertilisers, and short-term credit, while also making procurement processes more streamlined.

Under PMGSY Phase IV, about 3,065 unconnected habitations have been identified for future connectivity. Proposals covering additional road construction stretching across several thousand kilometres have already been submitted, and detailed project reports for remaining areas are being prepared.

In addition, road and bridge construction has also been supported under the PM JANMAN Yojana, especially in tribal regions. Several such projects have already been completed, while others are at different stages of execution. Over the years, a large number of rural roads and bridges have been sanctioned in the state, indicating a continued push to improve physical infrastructure in underserved areas.

The current set of projects adds to the broader infrastructure pipeline in Chhattisgarh, where both state and central schemes are being aligned to improve rural connectivity and support economic activity at the local level.
