Synopsis

Air India plans to complete retrofitting of eight legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft within the current year as part of its fleet modernisation programme. The airline has already inducted its first upgraded aircraft, featuring a three-class configuration with business, premium economy and economy seating. The retrofit programme covers 26 legacy Boeing 787-8 planes, forming a key part of Air India’s long-haul operations. The airline expects to complete 85 per cent of the upgrades by 2027, with full completion targeted by early 2028. The initiative is part of the Tata Group-owned carrier’s broader transformation strategy to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Air India is set to complete the retrofitting of eight legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft within the current year as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme, according to company officials.

The airline has already received the first upgraded aircraft, which arrived in New Delhi earlier this month after undergoing a comprehensive cabin refurbishment. The retrofitted aircraft features a three-class configuration, comprising business, premium economy and economy seating, and represents the initial phase of upgrades across its widebody fleet.

The retrofit programme covers a total of 26 legacy Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Airline officials indicated that approximately 85 per cent of these upgrades are expected to be completed by 2027, with full completion targeted by the first quarter of 2028.

The upgraded aircraft have undergone a complete interior overhaul, including cabin redesign and installation of new seating configurations. The first aircraft was refurbished at Boeing’s modification facility in Victorville, California, with exterior repainting completed at a specialised facility in San Bernardino.

Air India currently operates a fleet of 33 Boeing 787 aircraft, including 26 legacy 787-8s and seven 787-9 variants. The latter includes aircraft integrated from Vistara as well as newly inducted units. These widebody aircraft form a critical part of the airline’s long-haul international operations.

In addition to the 787 upgrades, the airline is also planning to begin retrofitting its Boeing 777 fleet in the second half of 2027. The broader fleet expansion plan includes the induction of new widebody and narrowbody aircraft over the coming years.

The retrofit initiative is part of Air India’s wider transformation strategy following its acquisition by the Tata Group. The programme is focused on upgrading customer experience, improving cabin standards and aligning the airline’s product offering with global benchmarks in long-haul travel.
