The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) conducted a workshop on escalator safety in the past week, bringing together officials, technical experts and industry stakeholders to discuss operational practices and enhance public awareness around safe usage across the metro network.


The half-day workshop was held at the DMRC Academy and marked the conclusion of a week-long safety awareness drive on lifts and escalators conducted across the network. The initiative focused on educating passengers and operational teams on preventive measures, safe usage practices and system reliability.

According to DMRC, approximately 150 participants attended the session in person, while representatives from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) based in Germany, China and Singapore joined virtually to contribute technical insights and share international practices.

The workshop included seven technical presentations covering various aspects of escalator safety and operations. Of these, six presentations were delivered by OEM representatives, focusing on safety standards, technological innovations and maintenance practices aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing risks.

An interactive virtual reality-based software solution developed for lift rescue training was also demonstrated during the session. The tool showcased the application of digital technology in training operational personnel, enabling simulation-based learning for emergency scenarios and system response protocols.

Officials indicated that the workshop provided a platform for metro organisations and industry stakeholders to exchange views and align on best practices. The discussions were aimed at reinforcing safety standards while ensuring consistency in operational procedures across systems.

The safety awareness campaign, which preceded the workshop, involved on-ground initiatives across metro stations to educate commuters on proper usage of lifts and escalators. These included deployment of staff and volunteers, dissemination of safety guidelines and targeted engagement with passengers at high-footfall stations.

DMRC, one of the largest metro operators in India, manages an extensive network of lifts and escalators across its stations. Ensuring their safe and efficient functioning remains critical given the high daily passenger volumes and the role of such infrastructure in facilitating seamless movement within stations.

The workshop forms part of the corporation's broader focus on operational safety and preventive maintenance, particularly as metro systems continue to expand in scale and complexity. With increasing reliance on vertical mobility systems in urban transport infrastructure, safety awareness and adherence to best practices remain key priorities for operators.

The initiative also reflects a growing emphasis on integrating technology-driven training tools and industry collaboration to strengthen safety frameworks in public transport systems, ensuring reliability and user confidence in large-scale urban mobility networks.
