The Chhattisgarh cabinet has approved a 50% reduction in land registration charges for properties registered in the name of women, with the decision taken in the past week as part of measures aimed at increasing property ownership and financial participation among women in the state.


The decision was finalised during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai at Mantralaya Mahanadi Bhawan in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar. Officials indicated that the reduced charges are intended to make property acquisition more accessible and encourage families to register assets in the name of female members.

Under the revised framework, women registering property will pay half the existing land registration charges. The government stated that the move is designed to strengthen economic empowerment by increasing asset ownership among women, particularly in regions where ownership levels remain relatively low.

The policy is expected to result in a revenue impact of approximately INR 153 crore for the state exchequer. However, officials indicated that the decision has been taken with a long-term perspective, viewing the concession as a social investment to improve financial inclusion and ownership patterns.

In addition to the concession for women, the cabinet also approved a 25% reduction in stamp duty for defence personnel, ex-servicemen and their widows. This benefit will apply to property purchases valued up to INR 25 lakh and can be availed once. The measure is aimed at providing financial relief to defence families, particularly those seeking to establish permanent residences after service.

The decision forms part of a broader set of policy measures cleared during the same cabinet meeting. These include amendments to rules governing minor minerals such as sand, with provisions to reserve certain mining operations for public sector undertakings to improve supply and transparency.

The reduction in registration charges is expected to have implications for the state's residential property market, particularly in the affordable and mid-income segments where transaction costs play a significant role in purchase decisions. Lower upfront costs could encourage formal property transactions and improve registration compliance.

From a real estate perspective, the move aligns with broader trends across states that are using fiscal incentives to influence ownership patterns and promote inclusivity in property markets.
