The New Mangalore Port Authority has approved an INR 11 crore project to construct a concrete road connecting the Baikampady Industrial Area with National Highway 66. The plan also includes a dedicated truck yard to manage heavy vehicle movement. The project aims to ease congestion, improve cargo flow and strengthen port connectivity in the region. Authorities have also planned traffic diversions during execution. The development is part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure along key coastal logistics corridors.
The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has cleared a proposal to invest INR 11 crore for constructing a concrete road that will connect the Baikampady Industrial Area to National Highway 66 in Mangaluru. The decision was taken after discussions between NMPA officials, the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board and traffic authorities. The focus was on improving road infrastructure in a zone that sees regular movement of port-bound cargo trucks and industrial traffic. The Baikampady Industrial Area is one of the key industrial clusters in Mangaluru and plays an important role in supporting port-led activities.
The existing road network in this stretch has been facing pressure due to high traffic volumes, especially from container trucks and bulk cargo vehicles. This has led to frequent congestion and delays, affecting both industrial operations and local commuting. The proposed concrete road is expected to offer better durability and handle heavy loads more efficiently compared to existing road conditions.
As part of the project, authorities have also planned a truck yard to streamline parking and reduce roadside congestion. This is expected to improve traffic flow on connecting roads and provide better management of idle freight vehicles waiting for port access.
Traffic police are expected to introduce temporary diversions and restrictions during the construction phase to manage vehicle movement and reduce disruption. Officials have indicated that these measures will be implemented in a planned manner to avoid major inconvenience to the public and transport operators.
The project aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure along National Highway 66, which is a key arterial route along India's western coast. The highway connects multiple port cities and industrial zones, making it critical for cargo movement and regional trade. Improved last-mile connectivity to such highways has been a consistent requirement in port-linked industrial areas.
Authorities have also stressed the need for timely execution of the project, given its importance for daily logistics operations. Once completed, the road is expected to support smoother movement of goods, reduce travel time for trucks and improve overall efficiency in the industrial belt.
