N Biren Singh inspected the ongoing construction of a new integrated terminal at Imphal airport, directing officials to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards. The project, being developed by the Airports Authority of India, is expected to significantly enhance passenger handling capacity from 1.39 million to 5 million passengers annually and enable round-the-clock operations. The new terminal will also expand parking capacity from around 100 to over 1,000 vehicles. Officials briefed the state government on construction progress and key infrastructure components. The Chief Minister visited the airport to assess the status of the ongoing project and was briefed by officials of the Airports Authority of India on key aspects of the construction and timelines. The inspection focused on evaluating the pace of work and identifying any bottlenecks that could impact delivery schedules.
During the visit, Singh indicated that the state government would extend all necessary support to facilitate the timely completion of the project. He emphasised that infrastructure upgrades at the airport are critical for improving regional connectivity and supporting economic activity in the state.
Once completed, the new terminal is expected to enable 24-hour operations at the airport, expanding its current operational window of approximately 12 to 14 hours. The upgraded facility will also significantly enhance passenger handling capacity, increasing it from 1.39 million passengers per annum to 5 million passengers annually.
In addition to capacity augmentation, the project includes a substantial expansion of parking infrastructure. The new terminal complex will accommodate approximately 1,089 vehicles, compared to the existing capacity of around 100 cars, improving access and circulation within the airport premises.
Officials also highlighted that the development is designed to improve passenger experience through upgraded amenities and operational efficiency. The terminal is part of broader infrastructure efforts aimed at strengthening aviation networks in the North-East region.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister noted certain deficiencies in workmanship at specific locations and directed concerned authorities to address these issues without delay. He stressed the importance of maintaining quality benchmarks alongside adherence to project timelines.
The airport upgrade is expected to support increased passenger traffic and facilitate better connectivity between Imphal and major domestic as well as international destinations. The development aligns with ongoing initiatives to modernise airport infrastructure across tier-II and regional cities.
The project also includes improvements to associated infrastructure such as cargo handling and operational facilities, contributing to the overall expansion of aviation capacity in the region. Officials indicated that progress has been made on multiple fronts, with work continuing across different components of the terminal.
The inspection underscores the state government's focus on accelerating infrastructure delivery and ensuring that large-scale public projects are completed within stipulated timelines, while meeting operational and safety requirements.
