Synopsis

Indias annual infrastructure spending has increased more than six-fold since 2014, crossing INR 12 lakh crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated while inaugurating the DelhiDehradun Expressway. The expenditure, which stood at below INR 2 lakh crore annually before 2014, has expanded significantly as part of the governments focus on roads, railways, logistics, and urban infrastructure. The Prime Minister highlighted that projects worth over INR 2.25 lakh crore are currently underway in Uttarakhand alone. The expressway project, built at a cost of INR 12,000 crore, is expected to reduce travel time and logistics costs. The infrastructure push is positioned as a key driver of economic growth, improved connectivity, and regional development across the country.

India?s infrastructure spending has risen more than six-fold to over INR 12 lakh crore annually since 2014, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said earlier this week while inaugurating the Delhi?Dehradun Expressway, highlighting the scale of public investment in transport and connectivity projects across the country.

Speaking at the event in Dehradun, Modi noted that annual infrastructure expenditure stood at less than INR 2 lakh crore prior to 2014, indicating a substantial increase in capital allocation towards roads, highways, railways, and related sectors over the past decade.

The Prime Minister made the remarks while dedicating the 210-km, six-lane Delhi?Dehradun Expressway to the nation. The project, developed at an investment of INR 12,000 crore, is designed to improve connectivity between Delhi, Uttarakhand, and adjoining regions, while reducing travel time and logistics costs for commuters and freight operators.

Modi stated that infrastructure projects worth more than INR 2.25 lakh crore are currently under execution in Uttarakhand alone, reflecting the scale of ongoing investments in the region. He added that the expressway is expected to support economic activity by improving access to key cities and tourism destinations such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Mussoorie.

The expressway includes features such as an elevated wildlife corridor of nearly 12 km, designed to ensure minimal disruption to animal movement along the route. Officials indicated that such design elements are being incorporated in newer infrastructure projects to balance development with environmental considerations.

The Prime Minister emphasised that improved infrastructure is central to economic expansion, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers, reducing logistics costs, and enhancing market access for farmers and businesses. The expansion of road and expressway networks, alongside investments in railways and logistics corridors, is expected to strengthen supply chains and improve connectivity between production centres and consumption markets.

The government?s infrastructure strategy has focused on scaling up capital expenditure to support long-term economic growth. Increased spending on highways, industrial corridors, and urban infrastructure is aimed at improving efficiency across sectors, while also generating employment through large-scale construction activity.

The Delhi?Dehradun Expressway is part of a wider push to develop high-speed corridors across the country, linking major economic regions and supporting regional development. Such projects are intended to reduce travel time between cities, improve freight movement, and enhance accessibility to emerging growth centres.

Officials indicated that sustained investment in infrastructure will remain a key component of the government?s economic agenda, with continued emphasis on connectivity, logistics efficiency, and regional integration. The increase in annual spending reflects a broader shift towards infrastructure-led development as a driver of economic activity and competitiveness.
