A 400-ton mobile crane toppled at a Metro construction site in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), disrupting traffic in the city's key business district. The incident, which occurred during lifting operations for the Metro Line 2B station, was attributed to a mechanical failure in the crane's lifting boom. No injuries were reported. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a penalty of INR 1 crore on contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Limited following the incident. Restoration work continued through the day, with a higher-capacity crane deployed for removal. The event highlights ongoing safety and operational challenges at large infrastructure sites in high-density urban zones.
A heavy crane deployed at a Metro rail construction site in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, toppled in the early hours of the past week, disrupting traffic in one of the city's busiest commercial districts, with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) subsequently imposing a penalty of INR 1 crore on contractor J Kumar Infraprojects Limited.
The incident occurred at around 4.30 am during construction activity for the BKC station on Metro Line 2B, which connects Andheri West and Mandale. According to officials, the crane, weighing approximately 400 tonnes, was engaged in lifting a pre-cast beam when it collapsed near the Asian Heart Hospital junction.
Preliminary findings indicated that the incident was triggered by a mechanical failure in the lifting boom of one of the cranes. Officials stated that following the failure, the load being lifted shifted onto another crane, which led to instability and caused it to tilt and eventually topple.
No injuries were reported in the incident. However, the collapse led to significant traffic disruption in the BKC area, which is a key business hub in Mumbai. Authorities were required to divert traffic for several hours while restoration work was undertaken at the site.
MMRDA officials stated that a 600-ton capacity crane was deployed to safely remove the toppled equipment. Restoration efforts continued through the day, indicating the scale and complexity of clearing the site in a densely built urban area.
The authority imposed a fine of INR 1 crore on J Kumar Infraprojects Limited, the contractor responsible for the construction work, citing safety and operational lapses. The penalty reflects regulatory enforcement measures in response to infrastructure-related incidents in high-traffic urban zones.
Officials also indicated that spatial constraints at the site contributed to the operational challenges. Due to the ongoing construction of the bullet train station in the vicinity, both cranes had been positioned on the road, limiting manoeuvring space during lifting operations.
The incident comes amid continued execution of Metro Line 2B, which is being developed in phases. The first phase between Mandale and Chembur was inaugurated earlier in the month, with construction ongoing across other stretches.
The collapse also follows a recent incident in the city's eastern suburbs, where a portion of a Metro-4 girder structure failed, resulting in casualties. While no injuries occurred in the BKC case, the event underscores the importance of safety compliance and equipment integrity in large-scale urban infrastructure projects.
Authorities are expected to review operational protocols and safety mechanisms as construction progresses across multiple infrastructure projects within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
