A road accident on the Kalyan-Murbad route led to the death of 11 people after an overcrowded taxi collided with a cement mixer truck. The vehicle was carrying almost double its permitted capacity, which worsened the impact and left no survivors. The crash occurred on a partially open bridge, raising concerns about road conditions and traffic management. Initial findings pointed to overspeeding and negligence. The incident has once again highlighted issues around illegal shared transport operations and weak enforcement on busy regional routes.
A fatal accident on the Kalyan-Murbad road in Maharashtra resulted in 11 deaths after a shared taxi collided head-on with a cement mixer truck. The incident took place near Rayta village on a bridge that was only partially open for traffic, with vehicles moving in limited lanes. Advertisement
The taxi was operating as a shared vehicle between Kalyan and Murbad and was carrying more passengers than allowed. While the permitted capacity was six people including the driver, a total of 11 people were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the crash. This overloading increased the severity of the accident and reduced chances of survival.
The collision occurred when both vehicles approached each other from opposite directions on the narrow stretch. The impact was strong enough to completely crush the taxi, leaving passengers trapped inside. Local residents reached the spot first and tried to assist before police and emergency teams arrived. All occupants of the taxi were later declared dead due to severe injuries.
The victims included daily commuters and individuals travelling for routine purposes. Among them were three siblings who were on their way to their native place. The incident reflects how common shared travel on this route turned into a fatal journey.
Police officials said that preliminary investigation suggested overspeeding and negligence by both drivers as key reasons behind the crash. A case was registered, and the truck driver, who had initially left the spot, was later traced by the police.
Residents in the area pointed out that ongoing infrastructure work and partial access on the bridge could have added to the risk. Vehicles were reportedly moving at high speed on the available stretch despite restricted conditions. Concerns were also raised about the regular operation of overloaded shared taxis on this route without strict checks.
Such shared taxi services are widely used in the Kalyan-Murbad belt due to limited public transport options and lower travel costs. However, overloading and lack of regulation continue to remain issues despite periodic enforcement drives by authorities.
Senior officials visited the accident site and reviewed the situation. The state government expressed condolences and assured support to the families of the victims. The incident has once again brought attention to the need for better monitoring of transport practices and safer road conditions on developing stretches.
