At least 13 workers were killed and 21 injured following a boiler-linked explosion at a power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh. The incident occurred at the Singhitarai facility and involved personnel from a subcontractor handling operations at the unit. The blast, caused by a high-pressure steam tube failure, led to severe burn injuries among workers. Multiple investigations have been ordered, including a magisterial probe, while the state government announced compensation for victims. The plant, part of a 1,200 MW thermal power project, has one operational unit and another under development. The incident has raised concerns around industrial safety compliance at large-scale energy infrastructure projects.
At least 13 workers were killed and 21 others injured after a high-pressure steam tube connected to a boiler exploded at a power plant operated by Vedanta Ltd in Singhitarai village, Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, in the past week. The incident occurred in the afternoon at around 2:30 pm, according to local authorities, triggering emergency response measures and multiple investigations.
Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur stated that the explosion took place in a tube carrying steam from the boiler to the turbine, resulting in severe burn injuries to workers present at the site. Four workers died immediately, while several others were rushed to hospitals in Raigarh and Bilaspur districts. Subsequently, nine more workers succumbed to injuries during treatment, taking the death toll to 13. At least six of the injured remain in critical condition.
Officials indicated that the explosion was likely caused by a leak in the high-pressure steam tube, though a detailed investigation is underway to establish the exact cause. Rescue operations were initiated shortly after the incident, with local administration and police teams securing the area and evacuating workers due to extreme heat conditions around the boiler unit.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed condolences and announced compensation of INR 5 lakh for the families of deceased workers and INR 50,000 for those injured. He directed the Commissioner of Bilaspur division to conduct a formal inquiry and stated that strict action would be taken against those found responsible.
The district administration has also ordered a magisterial probe into the accident, while the company has initiated an internal investigation. Vedanta, in a statement, indicated that the affected workers were associated with its subcontractor, NGSL (NTPC GE Power Services Ltd), which operates and maintains the unit. The company stated that its immediate priority is to provide medical assistance to the injured and support to affected families.
The power plant forms part of a 1,200 MW coal-based thermal project originally developed by Athena Chhattisgarh Power Ltd. Construction began in 2009 but remained stalled for several years before Vedanta Ltd acquired the asset in 2022. One 600 MW unit was commissioned last year, while the second unit is under construction.
Eyewitness accounts described a sudden explosion followed by thick smoke and panic at the site, with several workers engaged in maintenance and painting activities at the time. Authorities have deployed additional personnel at the plant to manage the situation and ensure safety during ongoing investigations.
The incident has brought focus to safety protocols at thermal power plants, particularly those involving high-pressure boiler systems, as inquiries continue to assess compliance and identify lapses.
