Synopsis

Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to significantly increase its operations by the end of the year, with daily passenger traffic projected to reach 50,000 and flight movements rising to around 380. The airport, which began domestic operations in the past year, is currently handling 20,000 passengers daily. Plans to start international services have been delayed due to geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region. IndiGo continues to dominate operations at the airport, contributing a major share of flights and expected to drive further growth.

Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), developed by the Adani Group, is expected to scale up operations to handle around 50,000 passengers daily, with approximately 380 flight movements per day by the end of the year, according to sources familiar with the development.

The greenfield airport, which began domestic commercial operations in the past year, is currently handling about 20,000 passengers daily, along with nearly 150 air traffic movements. Sources indicated that the growth in traffic has been stronger than expected, driven largely by airline commitments and increasing passenger demand.

Projections suggest that by the end of the year, daily passenger traffic could more than double, while flight activity is also expected to increase significantly. Sources stated that the pace of growth has been supported by strong airline participation, particularly from IndiGo, which currently accounts for around 70% of total daily flights at the airport. This share is expected to rise to nearly 80% in the near term.

It was further indicated that any change in IndiGo’s operational strategy could lead to a substantial increase in traffic at the airport, given its dominant presence. The airline’s continued expansion plans are seen as a key driver for NMIA’s traffic growth.

While the airport had planned to commence international operations during the current summer schedule, the rollout has been delayed due to the ongoing conflict in the Gulf region. Sources noted that the situation has impacted airline planning and scheduling, leading to a temporary hold on international services.

Despite the delay, there has been visible interest from airlines for international operations. Initial plans included around 16 arrivals and departures for international flights. However, timelines remain uncertain due to external geopolitical conditions.

The airport has also seen interest from carriers exploring long-haul operations. At the same time, international airlines are facing operational challenges related to deploying wide-body aircraft at the new facility. Discussions with these airlines are ongoing, but no final decisions have been made so far.

NMIA is being positioned as a key infrastructure project aimed at easing congestion at Mumbai’s existing airport and supporting long-term aviation growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Its phased expansion and increasing airline participation are expected to strengthen connectivity and capacity over time.
