Delays in road overbridge works worsen traffic congestion in Thiruvananthapuram

Synopsis

Ongoing delays in road overbridge (ROB) construction across Thiruvananthapuram have intensified traffic congestion at multiple railway crossings. While one bridge has been completed, several key projects remain pending, affecting both road commuters and train operations. These overbridges are part of a broader railway infrastructure upgrade, including line doubling works, but progress has been uneven. Incomplete structures have forced continued reliance on level crossings, leading to frequent traffic halts and longer travel time. Authorities have indicated that the remaining works will be taken up in phases, though timelines are still unclear.

Delays in completing several road overbridge (ROB) projects in Thiruvananthapuram have added to traffic congestion across key parts of the city. The projects were planned to replace level crossings and ensure smoother movement for both vehicles and trains, but progress has remained slow.

At present, only the overbridge at Studio Road has been completed. Key projects at Arikadamukku, Karamana–Kunjalumoodu, and other busy stretches are still pending. These locations continue to witness heavy traffic build-up, especially during peak hours, as vehicles are required to stop frequently at railway crossings.

The absence of these overbridges has also impacted railway operations. Trains passing through these sections are required to slow down near level crossings, affecting overall travel time and operational efficiency. These ROBs are linked to the larger railway line doubling project between Thiruvananthapuram and nearby routes, which has also faced delays beyond its initial schedule.

In several locations, preliminary work such as land acquisition and basic civil activity has been completed, but full-scale construction has not started. Officials have indicated that while some sections of the railway corridor have seen progress, work on these overbridges has not moved at the same pace, leading to gaps in execution.

Railway authorities have stated that not all level crossings will be removed, but some have been upgraded with improved safety systems, including manned and interlocked gates. However, these measures have not been sufficient to address congestion, as rising vehicle numbers continue to put pressure on existing infrastructure.

The issue is not new for the city. In the past, similar delays were reported near Kochuveli railway station, where an overbridge project remained stalled due to land-related challenges. That situation had also resulted in long queues and delays for commuters, reflecting a recurring pattern in infrastructure execution.

With steady urban growth and increasing vehicle ownership, Thiruvananthapuram’s road network is already under strain. Limited scope for road widening and continued dependence on level crossings have made timely completion of overbridges more critical for easing congestion.

Officials have indicated that the pending ROB projects will be taken up in upcoming phases of railway development. However, no clear timeline has been provided so far, and commuters continue to face delays in daily travel due to the incomplete infrastructure.
