Synopsis

Belagavi City Corporation has collected around INR 18.12 crore in property tax within the first 20 days of the new financial year, supported by a 5% rebate on early payments. The incentive has led to faster collections and improved compliance among property owners. A growing number of taxpayers have also shifted to digital payment modes, making the process more efficient. The civic body expects collections to rise further before the rebate period ends. This early momentum is important as the corporation had fallen short of its annual collection target in the previous year.

Belagavi City Corporation has begun the current financial year with steady property tax collections, mobilising nearly INR 18.12 crore within the first 20 days. The early collections indicate improved response from taxpayers and provide a stable start to the civic body’s revenue cycle.

The collection drive has been supported by a 5% rebate offered on early payments. This benefit has encouraged property owners to clear dues in the initial weeks itself, resulting in quicker inflows compared to the usual pattern. Officials indicated that such incentives continue to play a key role in improving voluntary compliance and reducing delays in payments.

There has also been a visible increase in the use of digital payment methods. Many taxpayers have opted for online platforms, including net banking and UPI, instead of visiting collection centres. This shift has helped the corporation manage collections more efficiently and reduce manual workload at offices.

Revenue officials continued tax collection activities despite being involved in parallel administrative work such as voter list-related duties and census-linked tasks. This ensured that collections remained steady without major disruption during the initial phase of the financial year.

The civic body expects collections to pick up further as the rebate window progresses, as a large share of payments typically comes closer to the deadline. At the same time, internal discussions are underway on whether the rebate scheme should be extended, similar to the previous year when it was continued for additional months to support higher recovery.

The current performance is significant when compared to the previous financial year, where the corporation collected around INR 70.8 crore, falling short of its overall target. Factors such as staff deployment for non-revenue work and gaps in tax compliance had impacted collections.

With a higher target set for this year, the strong start is expected to support overall revenue planning. Property tax remains a key source of income for the civic body, funding essential urban services and infrastructure maintenance.
