Synopsis

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu is set to lay the foundation for a 6 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Anakapalli district near Visakhapatnam, with an investment of INR 5,400 crore by ReNew Energy Global plc. The project forms part of the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024 and aligns with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The facility is expected to be commissioned within 24 months and generate over 2,100 jobs. The investment contributes to ReNew’s broader INR 82,000 crore commitment in the state and reflects increasing focus on domestic manufacturing to reduce import dependence in the solar supply chain.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N Chandrababu Naidu is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for a 6 GW solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Anakapalli district near Visakhapatnam, with an investment of INR 5,400 crore by ReNew Energy Global plc.

The project is being developed under the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024 and is aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity within India’s solar value chain. The facility will focus on producing ingots and wafers, key upstream components used in solar module production, as the country seeks to reduce reliance on imports.

Officials indicated that the project aligns with India’s broader objective of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. Expanding domestic manufacturing is considered essential to support this target while enhancing energy security and supply chain resilience.

ReNew Energy Global plc has committed a total investment of around INR 82,000 crore in Andhra Pradesh, reflecting sustained investor interest in the state’s renewable energy sector. The solar manufacturing unit represents a key component of this broader investment pipeline.

The facility is expected to be commissioned within 24 months of the foundation being laid and is projected to generate more than 2,100 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The project is also expected to contribute to industrial development in the Anakapalli region, which is emerging as a hub for energy and infrastructure investments.

The Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024 aims to attract large-scale investments in renewable energy manufacturing and promote backward integration across the sector. By supporting projects such as this, the state government is seeking to create a comprehensive ecosystem spanning generation, manufacturing and allied industries.

Senior executives from ReNew, including founder and chief executive Sumant Sinha, are expected to attend the foundation-laying ceremony along with public representatives and industry stakeholders.

The development comes at a time when India is accelerating efforts to scale up renewable energy capacity while simultaneously reducing dependence on imported components, particularly in the solar segment. Strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities is seen as a critical step in achieving these objectives.

With policy support, infrastructure development and increasing investor participation, Andhra Pradesh has been positioning itself as a destination for large-scale clean energy investments. The commissioning of manufacturing facilities such as the proposed solar unit is expected to support both national energy targets and regional economic growth.

The project underscores the shift towards integrated renewable energy ecosystems, combining manufacturing and deployment, as India advances its transition towards non-fossil fuel energy sources.
