KSH Distriparks has inaugurated Pune's first dedicated empty container yard, a 15-acre facility located near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, aimed at improving container availability in a key manufacturing and export corridor. The yard is designed to handle up to 100,000 TEUs annually and offers integrated services including storage, repair, washing and vehicle pre-delivery inspection (PDI). The development addresses a long-standing infrastructure gap in the Chakan Talegaon belt, where rising industrial and export activity had led to operational inefficiencies. The facility is expected to streamline container turnaround times and strengthen logistics support for exporters, shipping lines and industrial operators in the region.
KSH Distriparks has commissioned a dedicated empty container yard in Pune, marking the introduction of specialised infrastructure aimed at improving container circulation and logistics efficiency in one of India's key manufacturing clusters.
The facility, inaugurated in recent days, spans approximately 15 acres and is located around 8 km from the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. It is designed to serve importers, exporters, shipping lines and logistics operators by providing centralised services for empty container management, a segment that has remained underdeveloped in the region despite growing trade volumes.
The Chakan-Talegaon industrial belt has witnessed sustained growth in automotive manufacturing, warehousing and export-oriented activity in recent years. However, the absence of a dedicated empty container yard has contributed to longer turnaround times and operational complexities for logistics stakeholders. The new facility is intended to address this gap by consolidating storage, handling and value-added services at a single location.
Operationally, the yard is equipped to handle end-to-end container requirements, including storage, washing, repair and maintenance. It also includes parking infrastructure capable of accommodating around 60 trailers and car carriers simultaneously. The surface has been developed using paver block flooring to support safe stacking and smooth vehicular movement, while security features include perimeter walls, surveillance systems and controlled access.
A key component of the facility is a dedicated pre-delivery inspection (PDI) centre for vehicles, allowing exporters of completely built units (CBUs) to undertake inspection, cleaning, loading and securing of vehicles within the same premises. This integration is expected to reduce handling stages and improve operational efficiency for automotive exporters operating in the region.
The yard has a designed handling capacity of approximately 500 TEUs per day, translating to around 15,000 TEUs per month and up to 100,000 TEUs annually. To support operational efficiency, the company plans to implement a yard management system that will provide real-time visibility of container movement and assist in planning and coordination within the facility.
Industry participants indicate that infrastructure such as dedicated container yards is becoming increasingly relevant as inland industrial clusters expand and integrate more closely with port-led logistics networks. Improved container availability and faster turnaround times are critical for maintaining supply chain efficiency, particularly for export-driven sectors such as automotive manufacturing.
The development reflects broader trends in logistics infrastructure investment, where operators are focusing on specialised assets to support growing trade volumes and reduce inefficiencies in cargo handling. For the Pune region, the facility is expected to enhance connectivity between manufacturing units and port gateways by streamlining container movement and reducing dependence on distant container depots.
